Is he too young to go out and potty by himself? he's only 5 months old. I wouldnt think he's too young to go potty by himself.

well he just refuses to go potty by himself, i put him outside and he will pounce on the door and howl and cry till someone goes outside to watch him potty,
He would rather hold it than go a few feet to the grass to pee by himself.

The only way i can get him to go by himself is if i send my other dog out there with him, but thats not what i ultimately want

ultimately i want to let him outside where he goes and potties by himself with no one to watch him....he needs to be a big boy.

I am not sure how to get him to go on his own. I have always went out with my dogs to make sure they went when they were puppies. now that they are older I can just let them out and they will go, but i dont remember how they started on their own.

I've never had this issue. When my guys were little I at first went out with them. AS they got used to knowing that going out meant "potty time" just opening the door and letting them out by themselves was it. I can't help but think that your dog is so used to having you go out with him that he equates your being there is necessary. At 5 months my guys all went outdoors when I opened the door to go potty. by themselves. Can I ask why you do not want the other dog to go out when the other does? Shelties love routine and in his mind this may be the only way he knows that when someone is present he needs to go potty. Probably should have started takng him out without company a while ago. HIs whining and crying to be let back in kind of makes me think that he expects you to be there for him to be able to go

Sounds to me like "fear of abandonment" might be an issue with your pup. He's fearful of being left alone and that is overriding his need to go pee. You might try working out some way to give him (or make him have) some "alone time." but I don't how to go about that or even if it's a good idea.

well i dont mind letting my other dog go out there with him, i just hate having to wake up my other dog and put her outside so bandit can go pee:rolleyes2:

You might try a gradual approach. I think Bacca was around that age when I stopped going out with him.

What I did was go out with him and gradually started moved myself back so I was standing at the door outside, but not actually going out in the grass with him. Then I let him out and stood by the door so he knew I was near. If he didn't go, I would step outside and bring him back to the grass then move away. It didn't happen overnight, but it didn't take so very long either.

I also made sure he understood that potty time was not play time. He would get a praise and treat if he went. Play time always came after, but not immediately after (otherwise he would just be in a hurry to play and not go).

Hope this helps!

My Kia did the same

She did not howl but, she would not go potty unless she was on her lead with you there. But that was when she was a young pup till about 5-6 months. I tried sending her out with My elder dog Tasha, but that didn't work. She wanted human to hold lead!! It's because they are afraid of new surroundings I think or they just feel safer with you near because it's a big world out there.:eek2:
Best of luck Hope he cooperates with you soon. How long have you had him? is he a recent addition or have you had him from 8 weeks? Just wondering if this may be the issue.

i've had bandit since he was 5 weeks old:eek2:

this morning was hectic

i woke up waaaay too late.
i let mr. bandit outside along with my other girl and this time he was being stubborn....he wanted me out there....i didnt have time to deal with that, i was running late, so i left him out there, went and took a shower and got dressed in 10 mins and saw bandit still waiting at the door still holding it, so i go out there all the way to the grass and he goes and pees and i walk back to the door...he was walking towards me as he was peeing o.O...has a bad habit of peeing on the porch...(he did this before)i would walk away when he starts to go and than he would stop in the middle of his pee because i walked away

are there such things as doggy laxatives?
thought about giving him one of those and feeding him and putting him outside by himself so he'll be forced to have to use the bathroom....lol
probably shouldnt do that but i think that will be my last resort
i'll keep working on the gradually leaving him.

I'd try the gradual approach that BarbV suggested. Go out with him but gradually back away. Try to discourage the pee walking if he comes toward you as you back off.

I never had quite the issue that you're having but this is more or less how I got Sadie used to going out on her own.

oh man i just had the greatest idea that i just pondered over

ok Bandit knows Stay fairly well.

well i can go outside, tell him to sit and stay and than i will walk away till i go back in the house....maybe that will get him used to being out there alone so its not so scary
