Based on what I know about the procedure it seems absurd that debarking is banned in the state, while spaying and neutering are not. The latter have a much more profound effect on the animal's overall health, while the former is inocuous in that regard, if you discount the risks inherent in surgery. (Not that I'm in favor of banning spaying and neutering, which I'm not, although I'm not a huge proponent of them.)
As unpopular as your point of view is here (and on other discussion forums) I agree with you. I am no proponent of the debarking procedure, but (in my opinion) it is certainly no greater a physical trauma to a dog's system than spaying and neutering. The only difference (again in my opinion) is that proponents of spaying/neutering will tout "the greater good" of that process over that of debarking.
The fact that individuals choose to participate in one or both of these practices (whether or not I agree with the practices) is less objectionable to me than the questionable posturing people indulge in when explaining how wrong those folks are who believe differently than they do.

As I said earlier, I am not a proponent of debarking, so it is highly unlikely that such a procedure is in my companion's future. I say "highly unlikely" because I do understand that some people have encountered extenuating circumstances that caused them to make that choice from the options available to them. That said, the issue of debarking being illegal in Ohio is of interest to me since I will continue to divide my time between Ohio and Indiana for some time to come.
So far, the only Ohio regulation I can find that relates to debarking is in the Ohio Revised Code, Title 9 for agricultural issues. 955.22 makes it illegal to debark dogs that have been deemed "dangerous", but I have yet to find a section that relates to dogs that have not been deemed dangerous. I would appreciate it if anyone who knows where I can find the appropriate regs., would point me in the proper direction.

This is because some dumbass legislator bought the story that "bad guys" debark their dogs so the "good guys" don't hear them coming. No known cases of that have been presented, but don't let the lack of evidence get in the way of a good story.
