I get the people part.
It is the dog part I don't get.
Why is salmonella ok for the dogs to eat when it is in RAW food, but not when it is in commercial food.

Have they reported any dog illnesses? I think the concern with this recall is more for humans (mainly the young/old/immune compromised people) verses the dogs. I don't think the concern for the dogs getting salmonella is all that high. It doesn't explain the poster I've seen on here who says all her dogs were having seizures and such. I've seen a few other posters around online who have had similar reactions with their animals. This is why I'm not convinced this is all it is and based on their track record, I think I have reason to feel worried. I cannot believe after the aflotoxin and melamine, something like salmonella would slip through. What will slip through next? The animal food industry is in a sad state and I really hope the more angry people, the more change will come about. I'm following a story of a lady reporting her dog's illness to Diamond and they've blown her off/hung up on her/run around... I think they're only concerned about human lawsuits because they know that, in the end, will be a bigger detriment than if just animals died. Sad to say but true.

The bottom line for me, anything Diamond makes I won't spend my money on.
Its like anything else, recall it so many times, my money is good in my purse, not at the vets for sick shelties.
Go to their site, etc.. no, I want to hear it from the horses mouth.

I think the dangerous are mainly because that the dogs who be fed raw diet may have salmonella in their stool even in their mouth. Then people who touch them could be affected.

I've emailed my HO for more clarification on the salmonella and seizure issue. Hopefully, I'll get a response ASAP. They have inroads that the typical consumer would not have.
By eliminating Diamond, you are eliminating most of the premium dog food brands from your dogs diet, unless you go with the Canadian brands or crap food like Purina, IAMS, Eukanba, etc.
I do think there is a little bit of hysteria going on. Diamond has been pretty proactive about doing voluntary recalls on their product. They are erring on the side of caution. They are not saying it all bad, they are simply saying, we are pulling the product until we can be sure.
As I said in either this thread or another, if you need help interpreting the production codes that are being recalled, please PM me. I pulled an entire shelf of TOTW and left with only two lonely 5lb bags of kibble. Just to be safe.

I don't consider if voluntary as the FDA stepped in and tested their food and told them it had salmonella, then they recalled it. It might be voluntary but only because it was about to be forced. Hysteric might be correct, but after their other issues with recalls, they're certainly warranted. We should all know at this point Diamond doesn't test the dog food it's produced and since it's produced dog food with aflatoxin and melamine, it should be testing every last batch! My feeling is, while this time it might be salmonella which can't harm animals for the most part, what will it be next time?
actually there are still other higher quality brands of food avail, that are not manfactured though Diamond, IE Blue Buffalo, Earthborn, Vets Choice, castor and Pollux, Fromm, Instinct, Wysong, innova, California Natural and there are several others im forgetting off the top of my head....

I don't know if they were pre-empting the FDA or not. But I can tell you that we are pulling product off our shelf such that I have only 2 5lb bags of TOTW left.
And about the same with ChSP.
I can say that this company will stand to lose millions of dollars as a result of this scare. And at this point, I still think its mostly (?) a scare. Don't get me wrong....I'm not suggesting that none of this action is necessary, but I am suggesting that the impact on the economy of the pet food industry and jobs will most definitely be impacted. More jobs lost, I'm afraid.
