Refusing to eat

I am the same way, firm on not having picky eaters.

I am going to say this and I don't want to scare you, but Cleveland showed no other signs of sickness, only some days off and some days on food. Watch her weight carefully. I would do a journal and weigh her weekly. If that weight drops investigate further.

In January of 2009, Cleveland was 23 lbs and was becoming what I thought finicky. By July the same, he was 17lbs (that 25% weight loss apr.) and we lost him to stomach cancer.

My vet said and I believe her, dogs will not starve themselves over being picky. Their will to survive is stronger than picky~ness.

I know you are conscientious, just please be careful, as I know you will.

Keep us posted and my thoughts are with you.

The vet weighed her as well and instead of losing weight with all of the exercise she's been getting, she's actually gained weight. I was complete shocked, she only gets a cup of food a day, Wellness is not high in fat and she's been getting lots of exercise lately. I guess it hasn't made up for the 3 months I wasn't well. I'll keep an eye on her weight.

We're most definitely keeping a close eye on her and so far she's not starving herself. She eats so long a we wet her food.

I have been reading, just no time to really post.how has she been the last few days?

Keep us posted ok,will keep her in our prayers that she is getting better.

She's pretty much the same. I brought home a couple of free samples of Wellness in different flavors last night. She didn't show much more interest but ate her food. I gave her her regular food this morning and she gave me her "You expect me to eat that?" look. I put it down and walked away and she did eat it.

I'm really not sure what's up with her. She's acting normal otherwise.

My good friend was over last night, whom Sadie and Ginny love. Sadie was extra goofy with her, rolling around on her back, wagging her tail on my friend's lap and trying to lick her face. Sadie isn't a lap dog, she usually just tolerates being held so this behavior was a first, although she does do it with me once in a while.

I just wish Sadie could tell me what's up with her so I could stop worrying!

I had a thought last night.

We usually don't give the girls too many fattening treats, mainly home made treats and carrots. But I've been doing obedience training with them, which calls for higher value rewards that are very tasty.

I wonder if Sadie's holding out for something tastier?

She continues to act completely normal and is eating her food so long as I put it down and walk away. I haven't even been putting water on it.

It's very possible! I was thinking about this too. I have a feeling I'm going to have this problem with Bailey. She loves the prescription diet canned food. She goes crazy for it. I have a feeling that when I start transitioning her back to wellness, she is going to "hold out" for the canned food.

The Battle Continues...One Stubborn Sheltie

Sadie is STILL trying to refuse to eat. I'm beginning to really think that she's just waiting for me to feed her something better and that there's nothing wrong with her. Her nose has been out of joint since I was taking Ginny to training and giving her good treats.

She's continuing to act completely normal. Its been very hot lately so I've been keeping the girls indoors where its cool.

She's still refusing meals, but she's ALWAYS hungry by the time the next meal comes around and resorts to grudgingly eating her food.

I tried giving her a different flavor of Wellness and while she ate it, she didn't have any more enthusiasm for it than her usual flavor. She never misses more than one meal in a row and I pick up her bowl after 10 minutes.

Feeling VERY frustrated with her. Given all of the digestive issues that Sadie had in the past, I am just not ready to switch her food when she's been doing SO WELL on this one.

I've stopped trying to entice her to eat because I don't want this to be about attention or other goodies. I guess I'm just going to have to wait it out and hope that she stops being so stubborn, which is hard since I'm not even seeing an end in sight.

Sadie isn't losing weight yet and could stand to lose a few pounds, so I guess the battle continues...

Would you consider putting a little wet food (about a tablespoon) on top of the dry food and mixing it around? That is what we did for Mally when he was a puppy and was not a good eater. This did the trick. A can of wet food kept a week in the refrigerator. (I kept it a plastic storage container) (Wellness does sell canned food)
