Rest time?

this is a easy question for me, lol, i take naps durn the day, and my girls join me.... they do not think i should ever nap alone....so

Ahhh, naps. What are those? LOL
When I retire in a few years I plan on taking one whenever I feel like it!

Look I'm sorry for being offensive. I am VERY frustrated with Abby. It has taken a huge toll on my finances and emotions and she is not happy.

My point was 90 views and two responses?? Granted there are guests who can't post. I do not believe 89 guests read this post.

The question was directed to everyone who CAN post a reply :

" How much rest does your sheltie get during the day?"

There is no right or wrong answer. That is what frustrated me.

She gets tested for tick diseases 4x a year. Her thyroid is whats considered to be low for a sheltie but within the range for her vets so we can't try meds for thyroid. Her ears are a constant problem as is the itchy all over. Dry, flakey skin. Recurrent diarrhea. Limited diet which means no supplements. This dog has never in her life run more than 50' and has never played ball, fetch, or with another dog. The weather is warming up and her back is hot to the touch, and no she does not lay in the sun, its just from walking around. That was another question I had asked in the past was to please feel how warm your dog is on her back at her shoulder blades and received few responses....no right or wrong answer. She needs to have an MRI estimated @ $3200 but with all the other issues it is out of the question for me. We have 2 vets ongoing now, she has been to Tuft's twice, orthopedic specialist 3 times, accupuncture 23 times w/adjustments, 2 dermatologists. Last year not counting food....$6200 yes, $6200.......see where the frustrating comes from. We have an account with care one which helps.

See that seems to mean nothing to you but that is my exact question and is a huge help to me, so thank you. If the majority say their shelties rest during the day then I need to make her rest.

I dont have my sheltie girl yet, but I read forum posts for insights and help on any questions I may have. I want to be sure I bring her home and do things right to help her get adjusted and housetrained, etc. So while I read the posts, I dont always have input because I am not there yet. Im sorry to hear about all the troubles your girl has. How old is she?

You know, a post like this makes me not want to respond at all - it's HIGHLY offensive. Not everyone is on daily and/or not everyone may have something to contribute to your thread. I'm not going to post something unhelpful, like in this case.

I pretty much thought the same thing...........

Please keep in mind that this is an open forum. People have the choice to respond or not to respond to all posts. Just because people didn't respond to your post doesn't mean that it was a personal attack on you. There are many reasons why people don't respond to every post.

1. Time constraints: Many members don't have time to read all posts, and therefore read those posts that interest them.
2. Helpful input: Many members won't respond if they don't feel that they have any helpful advice. Most don't post just to post.
3. Free will: People have the option to do whatever they want--respond or not respond for any or no reason at all.

I would say that usually the # of reads to # of responses is a pretty small ratio.

However, your personal affront to all members who did not post is very off-putting, and may cause some people not to respond to you in the future. It is in everyones' best interest to be professional and maintain composure in all posts.

While I do read all posts, I do not respond to all of them and usually only if I have something worthwhile to say.

and lastly- don't worry about everyone else's shelties- they are all individuals and need different things. if you think Abby needs to rest, then go ahead and crate her.

when Cranberry was a puppy, I did put him into his crate for naps. Now that all dogs here are over 2yrs old and nap whenever they feel like it- there's no need for crated naps.

All 3 of mine are seniors and they nap a lot! When Casey wants attention, he paws on my arm. We play "Get that Casey Boy" which involves a lot of arm swinging and touching on my part and a lot of bouncing and jumping on his part. We do that for a couple minutes and then he goes to lay down. That's about the extent of the excitement around here.

I'm sorry you're still having so many issues with Abby. I had a lot of issues with my Scotty that I lost last year. I understand your frustration. I hope you can finally get some relief for her somehow.

Can you suggest to the doc that you try a low dose of thyroid med on her to see how she reacts? If she's on the low side, that's too low for a Sheltie. Scotty was on the low side and was a totally different dog when we finally started him on thyroid meds!

Why does she cost you so much per month?

Well, lets see, in the last month - $90 for chiro/accupuncture, 1 trip to the regular vet for diarrhea and proviable $65, 1 trip to the hollistic vet to have ears rechecked and p/u more ear wash and traumeel for the ears and dry skin around the ears and a new remedy $106. $45 for internet order for some thyroid support supplement since I can not get the prescription med for low thyroid.

The month before that her diarrhea was really bad and she needed fecal test, proviable, remedy, and ear meds along with her monthly chiro/accu, and interceptor.

Month before that I did the Thyroid profile through Dr. Dobbs $187.50, and her chiro/accu.

Month before that 2 visits to a dermatoligist, blood work, ear meds.

Granted I could stop accu/chiro but that's really the only thing that makes me feel like i'm doing something good for her and she enjoys it.

Does chiro/accu show any posite results/improvement ? Sally's soloxine would run me $6.00 a month if i had to pay for it...that is a lot cheaper than what you are paying now. What was diagnosis for chiro/acc ? Have you tried laser tx ? They run less $ than you are paying now, at least in my area.

Dr. Dobbs results show her thyroid to be low. The vet still feels its within the normal range.

Abby does feel better after chiro/accu. But it only takes her about a week to throw off all those adjustments. When something is "off" the good adjustments just don't last long. She could use weekly adjustments.

As far as lazer treatments - she gets that daily as I purchased one from when she was a puppy with her injury. I ended up renting one for 18 months and they applied the rental towards purchase price so seeing no improvement with Abby I just purchased it.

One vet says to crate her. Another vet says let her do what she wants. The chiro. vet says she needs adjustments more often and an MRI. So I'm just looking for a happy medium that's why I asked the question of how much rest does your Sheltie get. I do not really want to crate her as they are only here for a short time, i'm just having a hard time finding that happy medium.

One place we need to go visit is VOSM - located in MD. Just can't seem to save enough money for the 6 hr. one way trip. They should be able to tell where she is so far "off". They specialize in sports injurys.
