Rolled Leather Martingale Collar?

I know a lot of people that use the rolled leather collars but personally I wouldn't spend that much - I like to have a couple of collars (martingales) that I can wash regularly. Plus you never actually see the collars when they have a full coat. Deska has pulled out of martingales (he is the master escape artist and with the right angle has managed) so I think the rolled one would be even easier to pull out from. Very pretty tho if you can do it.
 
Yeah... your right, it is quite a lot for a collar. As a puppy what kind of collar is best? Since they grow so fast, can it be a sorta cheap flat nylon? This is one that I was looking at. It is cheap but has good reviews As they grow you can just get another size. Or is it bad for the fur on their neck, because it is wide?

Ahh can't edit my post till it's been approved, but would like to add that I want the collar to be on 24/7 with tags and be used for walks. I'm totally new to this so I don't know what tags are required on a collar but I know that when I move back home (Canada) the city requires a license, I will also add one with name, info, and stuff. And anything else. Comments on my choice of collars would help! Incase anyone is wondering... the Great Choice one will be used from puppyhood and will just buy bigger sizes as he grows. If you don't think that is a good one, because of the width or anything please tell me. Then when he/she is fully grown the Kangaroo one looks awesome (and you can choose colours :biggrin2: ) I'm really trying to learn as much a possible to give the best life possible for my future pup :fl
 
All my Shelties have braided kangaroo leather martingales, which they wear 24/7. These collars wear like iron -- I also sprung for the matching leashes. I figure they'll be in the family as long as I am.

Is your puppy going to be crate trained or spend any time in a crate? If your puppy has a metal crate or a plastic crate with a grid door, I highly recommend removing tags before he goes in a crate. Tags can get stuck between the bars and can lead to chocking or death.

My dog always has access to her crate, so I do not put tags on in our home. (i also live in an apartment, so unless she figures out how to use an elevator, she can't really go anywhere), but just in case, she wears a tag-less nylon collar w/ her name & my cell phone embroidered on it. Her tags (ID, rabies & license) are either attached to her nylon martingale collar or her easy walk harness, which she only wears when we go outside.
 
The rescue we got Olive from has the flat nylon martingales on all of their shelties. It left a temporary dent in her ruff but didn't outright harm it and works well when other people have to walk her since you use a snap on leash. We eventually switched to a thin climbing rope collar (cat collar size) for her tags and a martingale lead for walks. Because she has to have so many tags (city, rabies, ownership, HOA, rescue) we wanted something that wouldn't put too much weight on her neck.
 
I use nylon martingales for walking, but remove them when my dogs are at home. I found that the chain part of the martingale was turning their white ruffs grayish.
 
Oh dear! I guess I'm back on my soapbox! I just can't seem to help myself.

I'm a big believer in martingale narrow and light weight rolled collars for Shelties.

Flat collars of any material can mat the fur, particularly if they are fixed collars.

The problem with fixed collars on Shelties is they have thick ruffs and small heads. To size a regular collar onto a Sheltie neck requires either that you make it too tight (hence the matting) or too loose (hence slipping the collar).

Martingales are ideal for Shelties. These are NOT choke collars. Your martingale should be sized so that it hangs loose when not attached to a lead. When attached to a lead, it fits a little tighter around the neck than a regular collar, but only when they pull on the lead.

If they try to pull, it pulls tight enough to avoid them slipping the collar (because of their small head in comparison to their size).

Rolled collars are better than flat collars whether martingle or standard. They just matt less.

Of course, you can avoid the problem of matting if you only put their collars on when they go outside. Frankly, having a Houdini dog myself, my dogs wear their collars 24 x 7. But they are no crated anymore.

I understand the arguement for keeping collars off while dogs are crated....but I find it difficult to see how a dog could strangle himself with a martingale, even if somehow he managed to get the tags latched to the crate (remember, the collar is LOOSE unless attached to a lead. Even if a tag caught on the crate, the dog might be uncomfortable but would not strangle.

Like Chris, my dogs have custom-made, leather braided kangeroo martingales. Unfortunately, the maker that both Chris and I used is not accepting new clients currently.

But I encourage you to google "braided martingale collars" and see what you can find. I think the sample your showed is ok, but a little heavy

A plain flat collar is fine for a puppy - until their ruff grows in you wont need anything else. My preference is for a plastic clip rather than a buckle. If you are planning on leaving it on all the time you could get breakaway collar http://www.amazon.com/Premier-KeepSafe-4-Inch-Break-Away-Collar/dp/B0002H3ZSK.

Over here people don't tend to leave collars on dogs when they are home unless they are fence jumpers. I personally don'tleave a martingale on all the time because of the dangling parts. I know some people who walk their dogs in head collars or martingales but have a flat collar for them at home. But microchips are mandatory here so there is probably less need for us to have id tags just in case they get out.
