running in circles and barking

hunny there's no breaking the circles. they're herding dogs. that's what they do they herd and to do that they have to go around it. for a while i thought you could break it too....i've tried almost everything it's pretty much a "no" or a "stop" to make em at least cool down a bit.

While I think it is was Chris's technique which was "Stop it! You Morons!" that I've adopted as my new mantra! 
Seriously, though, some dogs are extremely difficult to train them to chill, and I think many owners just give up after a while.
My housekeeper has got my boys to no longer bark and twirl and lunge at the vacuum cleaner with a stern shake of her finger and a growly "AH-AH!"
And I thought I'd stopped Indy with the blow dryer, but that's just started back up again. And NOTHING will stop the boys from chasing David and the lawn mower. But that's outside at the cottage with no neighbours to complain. It's good exercise for them, so we just let them rip!
p.s. the dogs went absolutely NUTS today when I was watering my inside plants, of all things! I've never seen anything like it! You'd think I was getting out their food bowls, the way they were acting. They were literally leaping over each other and spinning in circles! Silly pups!

I think that maybe they need more exercise. My Buddy is 8 months old now.
I take him for walks, but the Dr. said no more jogging for me. Sometimes when Buddy seems to full of energy I let him out in the backyard, and say "Go Buddy Go" and he will run as fast as he can for a few minutes. Our backyard fence doesn't have the gates yet on either side, so I can't let him out by himself for long. When I walk Buddy, I notice that he wants to go to fast for me, so I will extend his lead when we get to an empty lot and I slowly rotate in circles with Buddy on a long lead it takes much longer for him to circle me at a distance. I do know that Buddy is more relaxed and tired when he has had the time to work off some energy. Sometimes in the house I will say "Go Buddy, Go" and he will go as fast as he can in the house too.

Try a penny can. Take a can and place a few pennies in it. When she starts with the vacuum or hair dryer, rattle it, tell her no and when she stops for a brief second, praise her. I did that with Marlie because she used to be awful with the vacuum. It took two or three times of me shaking the penny can at her and she stopped. I would just carry it around with me while I was vacuuming. She doesn't like to be in the same room with it now. Hope that helps a little.

Yep..its a herding thing...learn to love it!!
Abby is a world class spinner...Clancy I had to teach to spin...he only does it when I ask him to.
With some I think its like a OCD thing...they just can't seem to help themselves!!

From what I understand, its just one of those annoying personality traits that some shelties have. Some are yipper than others, some spin, some don't. Neither of my shelties does that insane spin and I was shocked when I saw Sadie's sister doing when we went for a visit this summer.
I came across this You Tube video about six months ago, its pretty funny, but it also made me realize how easy I have it with Sadie. She's very un-neurotic, as shelties go. She is generally fairly quiet as long as I make sure she's getting enough exercise and almost never spins. She only spins a few times when we arrive at the park and I'm about to play ball with her.

not helpful i know....
but I laugh and call hubby over to take a look. We love the sheltie antics.
the only thing I can recommend is more exercise. When my dogs miss their 1hr walk they are more insane than usual

Letterman should use that video for his top ten. Mine do the sheltie ballet when they want out in the back. They love the hose when I water, they run through it, no spinning, lots of barking. The one with off the leash, made my head spin. Funny! Thanks for finding the video.
