Sandstorm needs an echocardiogram! His cardiac test abnormal

Help! I'm so upset! Sandstorm's senior health bloodwork was fine but the cardiac test was abnormal, he needs an echocardiogram! Anyone out there with this issue? This means he's at risk for heart failure!
 
OMG Karen, what horrible timing, with your joy over the puppy.... I do not have experience with this in dogs - if it is a valve failing they just replace those in people, I don't know about dogs. I know you must be panicked but try not to project too much onto this until you have ALL your test results. Sending you all kinds of supportive prayers. :hugs

Thanks. Actually Im very grateful that I am getting this puppy, thank goodness !
 
Gavin needs a senior vet visit soon....I am at the point where his leg problems seem to over ride everything. Maybe I am too hyper-focused. All that matters is that he is happy :)
 
I have two Sheltie friends with senior dogs who have heart issues, and my son's 14+ year old Border Collie was just diagnosed too. They are all being treated with an oral medication very successfully. The echo will tell your vet whether Sandstorm is a candidate for the med and if he needs it, that will probably resolve the problem. It's become much more common recently due to the new information about pet food, it seems. Hang in there and don't panic.

And for what it's worth, I've been on a similar medication for nearly 20 years for the same issue, and I'm still kicking just fine! :o1
 
Karen, Ann's comments are right on target. Our sheltie boy, Rascal, was dx'd with heart problems when he was 11 and he lived until just before his 15th B-day. So don't panic...heart issues can be treated, even long term, and your boy may have many happy years left.

Sandstorm's heart murmur is graded at a 2, the vet asked me if he has a cough, he'd doesn't, she thought that was good. He doesn't have any labored breathing at all. We do our stays and runs and he's so happy when he runs!! He distance stays with distractions, and freeze stays really well!! Brag brag!!
 
I would guess that years ago dogs weren't treated for the lesser heart murmurs at all.
And you are lucky with the no coughing :)
Gavin does and it always freaks me out cause it sounds so awful! But its not like he does it often enough I will ever get it on video...
