Sansa has bladder stones

My poor girl has bladder stones. About two weeks ago I took her to the vet and we thought it was a UTI so she had antibiotics. The next week, bacteria was still present so stronger antibiotics. Yesterday we went in and had an Xray done which showed 3 decent sized stones. The vet thinks that they are struvite stones since those types of crystals were in her urine, but said they would have to test them to know for sure.

We are going to try to dissolve them with a special diet (Hills s/d). Sansa is a picky sheltie and light eater so I'm worried about her not eating all the food. If she doesn't, they want to do surgery to remove them. We have our follow up next week to see if the diet is helping at all.

Right now Sansa eats Whole Earth Farms small breed grain free food. Is there anything I could switch to or add to help prevent any future occurrences? Sansa is not even 2 yet, so I want to make sure she stays healthy! Share your tips and tricks!

Poor Sansa. I hope they dissolve and no surgery is required. I've read that dogs can take cranberry capsules to prevent the build up of bacteria in the bladder and urinary tract. I know humans who are prone to this sort of thing who take cranberry as a preventative. Might be worth looking into. Good luck

Special Diets contain less magnesium, protein and phosphate, making the urine more acidic. In some cases, your vet will also recommend that you give extra vitamin C supplements because vitamin C makes the urine more acidic. If your dog has had urinary stones, your veterinarian evaluate your dog must have preventative special food for life.

Wet foods increase the risk of urinary stones, as the dog takes up relatively more magnesium, ammonium and phosphate when it eats wet food. Your dog should drink much water because the water washes kidney clean thoroughly. Make sure that the dog always has clean and welcoming, litter turned the water. Your dog must have a lot of exercise, preferably outdoors and should be able to urinate as often as it wants.

Tilly had problems back in Nov/Dec, went on antibiotics then, but early Jan, they showed back up again, and x-rays showed about 5-6 stones. Had an operation to remove them, and is now on a food that is formulated for these conditions.

Hopefully things won't return.
