scared/hiding six month old male, sheltin

The progress you've made with Sheltie is fantastic!! He is one lucky boy to have you and your family. I'm sure he'll love the new home now that he's more secure. He is a very handsome dog!! Thanks for keeping us posted on his progress! :biggrin2:

Yep and maybe it will help someone else with a pup.

I was surprised at his picture as that is not what I had imagined.... then I tried to figure out what I had imagined... not sure but he is a great looking guy.
 
thanks for posting an update, great job! I think if you start dropping treats closer and closer to you you might get him more comfy to take it from your hands. Also I find Nina Ottoson toys very entertaining for pups and improving developmental learning, Che loves his, we only have one yet but am buying another from Cherrybrook,now that I decided to get White on White shampoo for Che.
You are not saying if you use clicker, I find it does job much faster teaching pups anything...
 
update... about time ;)

Sorry folks for not posting anything sooner.

between work and sleep and puppy management I find little time for anything recently.

Sheltin has progressed so well.
I've also created acouple of 'bad behaviors' along the way.
He likes to lick everyone and everything, especially in the mornig when I'm trying to nap and he wants his water and food.
He also likes to paw at me if I ignore him. Could be alot worse things to complain about for sure :)

I've been working alot with him, as you can imagine.
The hardest things for me to get him to break is his wanting to run and bark/jump/scratch at me as I'm leaving. He literally atacks the door after I close it. I hear him growling and barking at the door.
When I'm inside, I easily redirect him, but am not sure what to do once I go outside.
I've tried going out and back in but he stops when I go back inside.
I've tried ignoring it too. Basicaly picking my battles, especialy considering what this guy was apparently through before we got Sheltin.
His socialization is coming along, be it slowly, it stil is moving along.
He's warmed up to Barbi enough to let her walk him and he'll sneak his body between us wherever we're sitting too. A little bit of jealousy if he's not the focus of attention, especially if we look at or talk to the cats.
Guess I'd rather have an overly hangy pup than a scaredy pup.
But great strides for sure.
He loves his walks. Is getting used to coming up to me to be put on his leash.
He goes potty outside as soon as we get him outside.
If we don't get him right away he has a puppy pad spot with a mat under it which works wonders.
He still does some scenting every now and then on the new things in the house, but that's my fault for not working harder on that issue.

I really truly appreciate all the friendship and supportive advice and encouragement we've gotten with Sheltin.

I'll post some more details and pictures pretty soon.

Oh and Sca paws at me some and will also stand on the center console on the couch if I am on the laptop. And how dare I talk on the phone :rolleyes2:

Sounds like Sheltin has settled in nicely to me :cool:
 
I think all SHelties want to be the centre of attention. My certainly have and will act similarly to Sheltin when I don't pay attention to them. Emma actually lies on the bed with a paw or chin on my arm when I am at the computer. Liam likes to lie right at my heels if I am standing doing anything and this after only a week here.

Always remember that the poor dog was hiding and not wanting to be loved :(

This is such great news, Steve! It's wonderful to hear how far Sheltin has come, thanks for letting us know.

The problems you're having do sound minor and mostly Sheltie-like. Keep up what you're doing...many of them grow out of some of these behaviors with maturity. But he's come such a long way from where you started...awesome!

Gavin gets fed everytime I leave. I can't just leave without him barking, etc.
I use treatballs (multiple ones) as well.
That way he is busy while I sneak out. Now sometimes, like on the weekends when he knows I'm not supposed to leave him, he won't let me leave peacefully with just his food. So out come the high value treats (in treat balls).

Oh, and when I come home he throws himself against the door. and barks his head off. guess he loves me!
 
I have really enjoyed reading this thread. First great job with Sheltin. We found a 4 to 5 YO little Sheltie Siera and a lot of what you describe with Sheltin is so much like Siera. I was lucky though because Siera took right to me and my Lab/Shepherd, Buddy, but she is just like Sheltin to my hubby and everyone else. Hubby still can not reach down and pet her, she will not take food from his hand unless he doesnt look at her and if he makes any loud noises she hides behind my chair and barks. She is great on a leash but I walk both dogs at the same time and she loves Buddy so much that anything he does must be O.K. but if a car or a person happens by she will try to hide underneath my legs.

We have had Siera for 3 months and it has been a slow process. I dont know if she will ever warm up to strangers but I am still hoping she will to my hubby and close family.

Again great job with Sheltin and I wish you all the luck.
