Scratching at Lip

Mikos has been scratching at his lip for the last couple of weeks and it has become puffy and pink in the area. We thought when he first started that it was a mosquito bite because we have had quite a few but this seems like a long time now. We have looked at his teeth and there doesn't seem to be anything bothering him. We haven't changed his food or treats. The area involved has become bigger over the last week but the amount of scratching seems to have decreased. I think I will have to get it checked but has anyone seen this before on their shelties? He has no other areas on his face or body that are affected.

We haven't had anything like this but I wonder if he had a bite that got infected. I would certainly have the vet check this.

I haven't seen anything like that before, either. Let us know what the vet says, hope Mikos is better soon!

That looks like what happened to my maltese. It went on for almost a year. We even took her to a dermatologist. They gave her steroids, antibiotics, medicated wipes. Nothing helped. She was eating wellness food at the time. We decided to switch her to a limited ingredient food. Her itchiness and swollen mouth cleared up in a few weeks. It's been over a year now and she's doing great.

I suggest you take Mikos to the vet to make sure it isn't anything serious. Also try changing him to a limited ingredient food in case it is allergies like my maltese. She eats lamb kibble now.

I hope Mikos feel better soon!

Ouch! That looks like it hurts and probably needs some kind of antibiotic treatment. I'm curious to find out what it is? It does remind me of something with a kitty we had years ago. Turned out it was from eating out of plastic dishes. We switched to stainless and never had the problem again. I think this looks more like a bug bite of some sort though. I'll be curiously waiting to hear what the doc says.

Ahhh..just saw "take4roll10's" post... Another thought to maybe allergy related? Interesting..

Looks like it could be a bite or allergy related. I would be interested in what the vet has to say too. Hope it goes way soon.

How's Miko doing?

Thank you very much for asking, Mikos lip is showing some improvement today. When I posted the photo on SN I also sent it to his breeder to get her opinion in case she had seen it before. Like many here she thought it was either an allergic reaction from a bug bite or sting (biting at a wasp or something) or inflammation from possibly chewing on a stick and getting splinters. She suggested giving him a Benadryl pill and dabbing the area with gauze soaked in apple cider vinegar. I did this at about 4:00 yesterday afternoon and by 7:00 it appeared that the puffiness was already going away. I checked again when I got home from work today and the puffiness is definitely going down as well as the area looks a more normal pink colour, and you can see the hairs in the area again. I have given him one more Benadryl and dabbed the area with more apple cider vinegar so I will see how it looks tomorrow. It feels a bit dry and crusty so I thought I would rub a little vaseline on it before bed to add some moisture. All going well this was the problem and he will be as good as new in no time. I have included a before and after picture.

It definitely looks like it is getting better! Thanks for updating us.

There is that ACV remedy. It seems like there is nothing that it can't cure :wink2:
