Sebaceous Cyst

My 3 year old sheltie has 2 sebaceous cysts. One on her back in the center and one on her back-butt side area. They are about the diameter of your ring finger tip. The vet said to apply a warm compress to extract the nasty stuff and put bacitracin on it. Which I have been doing. She actually bit herself and drew blood recently on both of them. I am getting worried about how this is going to progress as time goes by. Do I ask the vet to remove this? It doesn't bother her every day but I would say every two weeks or so. The vet says it common on furry dogs and didn't imply that it had to be removed. I just fear one day while I am at work she could bite them again and I won't be there.

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on how to (if possible) eliminate these from her?
 
Callie has had one on her back hip/leg area. the vet has expressed it and hasn't worried much about it. it was actually gone for a long time and just the other day when I was petting her and thinking about brushing her that I noticed it again. Callie has never been bothered by it so it hasn't been a big deal here.
I did find a new bump and will get the vet to check it out when we get in to see him...
 
I've heard about this supplement for cysts and tumors but have no personal experience with it.

Years ago, we were told by a nutritionist to give our Sheltie who had lots of cysts 50 mg of B6 a day to help keep him from developing them. It did seem to slow the growth down some.

Generally they don't seem to bother the dogs, but it sounds like your dog may be worrying at them. I'd talk to your vet if that's the case. He might want to remove them.
 
Cysts

My blue merle O'Keeffe had a nasty cyst on her tail but it didn't bother her. I used to express it off and on for years I was lucky, she didn't pick at it herself. The vet didn't seem to think that it was a big deal at all when he looked at the bump.

I came back vcation yesterday to find the one cyst on her back/butt area burst or she bit it open. It looks like a gunshot wound, it's literally a huge hole. I cleaned it up with warm water, a compress and bacitracin. She goes to the vet first thing in the morning. Thank you for your replies after reading them all I am beginning to think this might be something else since they are so huge and it's literally an open wound that is deep (not bleeding but red). I am the first appointment at the vet in the morning. I will let you know the results.
 
I think our Zoey had such a cyst on the top of her head when she was about 10 months old. It was quite raised and hard. Our vet said it was probably benign, but that a particular type of skin cancer looked very similar so she recommended it be removed. We had her scheduled for surgery the next week. I'm happy to report it was benign, the area healed quickly and she's never gotten another one...thank goodness.

Ouch, the poor girl! Sending get well wishes for all to go well at the vets and for a quick recovery. Do let us know how it goes tomorrow.

A sebaceous cyst is a sack filled cyst. If the sack is not removed the cyst can reoccur over and over again. I know this as I have them. The one where I had the sack surgically removed never returned. The others where I use warmth or salve to draw them out reoccur periodically. And they can look pretty narly. They are not really dangerous though.

I hope your baby feels better soon. Sebaceous cysts can be painful.
