Shampoo Recs?

Ok so my sheltie smells like dog a bit too much. And everything he is near smells like him too. Within half a meter of him our nostrils get a whiff of that strong doggy odour. We've been bathing him once a week because we can't stand the smell and for-what-ever-reason he loves baths but I'm worried that his skin might suffer because of it. Can anyone recommend a shampoo that can be used every 1-2 weeks without destroying his skin or hair?
 
He shouldnt need to be bathed that often..what are you feeding him? Some times different food can make them smell. What shampoo are you using on him now??
Is he outside all day and wet? That makes the doggy smell worse.
 
Does, he look and feel dirty... when he is stinky? Take a look inside his mouth and peek at those teeth... could what you be smelling is doggy breath?

Your sheltie should not be stinking that much... it is actually not recommended that you wash a dog that much. Once a month should be about tops... unless something happens and he falls in a big mud puddle. Or meets a skunk. :biggrin2:
 
Yes, something is definitely off here. Is he rolling in something. perhaps? Sorry we're asking all these questions and guessing, but Shelties are usually very easy-keep in the smelly department. Oh, did you check his poop-chute?

To nswer your "real" question :wink2: be sure to use only a dog shampoo, not human -- dog shampoo hasthe correct ph. I recommend Chris Christensen's White-on-White. I also like the Plush Puppy line. There's a wmoan in TN who sells it al an excellent price!

Because Deska has a dry coat I give him regular 'rinses' rather than full shampoos. Get a car sponge and soak it in some warm water with a coat oil or conditioner mixed in and then wet the coat by squeezing the sponge as you wipe it down the coat. I use a few drops of the Plush Puppy Seabreeze oil in the water and it works wonders for conditioning the coat and making him smell nice. It doesnt ruin the coat at all, plus it is quick to wash and easier to dry off because they arent soaked to the skin/undercoat (esp good for winter). If you cant get plush puppy (they are online) there are probably other brands of coat oils for dogs.

You can also try a dry shampoo. I have a tea-tree powder shampoo for mine (altho I dont use it alot). Barb uses a dry shampoo, can't remember which one though.

A really thorough brushing should also get a bit of the stink out.

Also, you may want to give his privates a bit of a regular wipe.

Have you had his anal glands checked? I recently had the same thing with Baxter. I know he has a problem and have his glands expressed once a month but he got an infection anyway. Now that the infection is cleared up he seems fine. There may be an infection or they might just be full. Might be worth checking.
 
I was wondering about the anal glands too but it's not so much a "poopy" smell, but more of a really strong "dog" smell. I think it might be because it snows very heavily where I am and he likes to play in the snow. The moisture probably gets stuck in his fur. That's my guess...
 
Other thought: how often are you changing/washing out his dog bed? A sheltie shouldn't need much in the way of bathing so if he's carrying an odor I'd look at the following items:
1. brushing teeth
2. trimming poop chute
3. regular foot wipes
4. fresh bedding
5. change in diet
6. vet check for illness, blocked glands

...not necessarily in that order.

We've had great luck here with creating a "poop yard", a fenced in area paved with 12" concrete pavers so that even in mucky weather they can get outside without getting muddy. We scoop the yard a couple of times a day and it keeps everyone fresh.
 
Very good points Janet. One would be surprised out how much the crate bedding can hibernate oders. And if its a small young pup,that may piddle a bit in the night,it does for sure make bedding something that should be checked.

I know Trapp seems to be more comfortable,in a fresh bed,so I do wash & switch out his blanket & if the sherpa crate liner needs washing,it gets it to.

Poop shutes...oh for sure! We check under the tail seems like everytime he comes in the house~
 
You really don't want to bath that often.

Apart from the medical and other advice you have already received, I would get a good dry shampoo (like Chris Christensen "Show Off").

You spray it on, and then towel it off. Does a great job of freshening between full baths and removing wet dog smell.

Then finish with a leave-in conditioner like CC Ice on Ice.
