... We are still having some issues with ... the water drinking But luckily we
have not had a shortage of * snow * here in Ottawa ... endless snowcones to be had ... I was wondering if someone could explain about their Shelties eating pumpkin ..etc. just curious ... we just do kibble ... Happy week-end everyone !

Have you changed bowls? Some shelties prefer metal bowls, some plastic, some ceramic. Also, some people use those water feeders that drip down from a bottle into a bowl. I hope you can get her to drink out of a bowl, too. (so you are able to know how much water (approximately) she is drinking daily.

Lord, all mine will drink sludge out of a puddle -- no fussies at Nattering Springs!

Mine too! Bacca seems to think that mud puddles have extra minerals or something.

Dexter's Mom, maybe just throw a spoonful of dirt into the bowl and Treesa will feel at home!

On the pumpkin, sweet potatoe front: great, great, great for digestion and stools. It seems to deal with either loose stools or constipation. Just a good balancer.

But you can do this a whole bunch of ways....either a food that includes it in the kibble, by treats that have these has the main or only ingredient (e.g. we sell sweet potatoe "rawhide"....lovely!) or by supplementing the food with a tablespoon or so of canned....Its all good!

Our little guy don't really like water in general. Have to make him run around a LOT before he'd even consider water a necessity. I don't bother with water bowl...just wash his food bowl and use that for water bowl. Mozart's also got a water bottle of his own that has a big opening at the top so he can fit his entire nose into it. He used to love gnawing on ice cubes but now he'd only lick half of it and "hug" the rest.

You might consider something like this.....It's not cheap, but its a big favourtite at the sore for cat lovers.

I know its for cats, but Shelties are often cat-like anyway. Perhaps she doesn't like to slurp from a bowl. This fountain dribbles the water over the bowl and they lick it off without getting their faces wet. That may be one explanation for her lack of drinking. A little far-fetched, I know.

Another thing to think about is to use an elevated water bowl. She might find it more comfortable to drink from.

I wonder if you made her some brothsicles and offered that to her if she would find them interesting. If she does, then you could try one in her bowl. Just make a thin broth and freeze them in an ice cube tray. We used to do it for our show dogs when we were going to be at a hot show and wanted to make sure they kept hydrated. Don't know if it will work for your dog but it might be worth a try.
