Shedding heavily in Fall?

She's blowing her coat. Very typical at that age. I used a coat rake on Max to get the worst of the loose undercoat. You should have enough fur to knit a sweater when it's done.

Totally normal. My boy Birch just turned 1yr and he blew all of his undercoat as did his brother and sister. Jamie did the same Even my older dogs blow coat in the fall. It like they are getting ready to grow coat for the winter.
A warm bath will loosen the rest of the coat that is coming out faster and then line brushing. Then it is a waiting game. Coat starts to look nice around 15-18 months again.

This confuses me, if they blow their coats in the fall and it takes 15-18 months to look nice, wouldnt it never look nice, every 12 months being blown?
I see pics of dogs that look like smooth coated dogs and dont know if someone shaved them or that is their look and someone isnt saying they are mixed shelties and well it all leaves me baffled.

That is only the first year. I meant be 15-18months of age it will look good or be getting better. The outer coat will continue to grow and the 2nd year will be less dramatic.
In conformation, 1yr to 18 months is the time alot of dogs are held out from showing. The fluffy puppy coat is no longer there and the adult coat isn't fully in. Jamie was a a pretty fluffy pup but looked darn right smooth just after a year. He is beginning to resemble a walking haystack now at 2.5yrs.

boy do I feel stupid, sorry I thought the months was time for coat to come in. Makes perfect sense now, I didnt realise pups go through this stage at that long of an interval.
I am petty I suppose I just love that full beautiful coat all flowing and well the whole sheltie sable look with collar and blaze and such. It gets me everytime.

My first Sheltie (who ended up being a tiny little guy at 12 pounds) took 2.5 years to grow his coat. In all his 17 years, he didn't ever have an excessive coat. Considering my current sheltie, who at age 6 is a furball with feet, I had an easy time.
My current Sheltie, Bela, started her seasonal coat blow about a month ago, and for about two weeks, we went around constantly trying to spit out floating hair. I had just had shoulder surgery, so splurged in having her fully groomed. Well worth the effort - I usually get her done twice a year. It cut down on the shedding considerably, though I still got about a pound of hair off of her last weekend.

Shelby started shedding heavily too. I could vacuum every day and you would still see piles of black fur. I think maybe we should get black carpeting.
Oh thanks! I didn't know that shelties will blow their coat when they are turning one. It's annoying to find her hair everywhere especially when I cook very often! Have to ensure that my hands are free of her hair!
Yup it's only these few weeks that I notice a lot of her coat coming out when I give her a bath. Her brush will be full of hair when I brush her but it wasn't like this last time.
