Sheltie and Maine Coon kitten

We will be getting a Maine Coon kitten soon. She will be about 5 months old when we get her. Does anybody have any experience with Maine Coons and Shelties living together?

Izzie, our Sheltie is pretty active and has chased our other cat( who is very shy) around the house. The cat pretty much stays upstairs to avoid Izzie. My hope is that the Maine Coon puts Izzie in her place.

Any thoughts?

I have only had one cat in my life, and he was a tuxedo cat named Tuna. My sheltie, Gizmo, LOVED him.

Go to youtube and search for sheltie and maine coon. There are some pretty cute videos. I think you will be ok.

I used to have a maine coon. My sheltie got along fine with him. He was a big boy at 16 pounds (not fat) so he could put up with Pepper trying to herd him.

We used to have tuxedo cat Sam and he got along great with Maggie and our first sheltie but he was a wee kitten when we brought him home and he was full grown when we got Maggie. Introduce them slowly..I will have to say my friend has a Golden and got a 6 week old kitten and they just play and play.

I know Maine Coon's are supposed to be fairly calm, but every cat is different. I think it depends more on the up bringing and personality of the cat then the breed.

That being said, my bff has a cat that is part Maine Coon. He is the most laid back cat I have ever seen. He's spent some time around both of my dogs and had no problem with them.

Your cat is young so may be afraid initially, but should get over it, assuming kitty and doggies are proper acclimated to each other. :smile2:

Bimmer, Ashley's (weirdly enough forget her nickname, lol, corbinam?) cat is a Maine Coone.. Bentley and Lexi are running circles around him and vice versa. he's an adorable cat!
Love her videos of the silly dogs and gorgeous kitteh when they are trying to rile him up to play too :)

I have just a tabby but he and my boys get along great and he sleeps on top of them when they are on the couch. He hates other cats but loves the dogs....hope you have the same luck.

I don't know if you get it or not but today on Animal Planet's Cats 101 they had a segent about Maine Coons. Pretty cute.

A little over a year ago we put down our wonderful cat Chancellor due to an inoperable tumor that had taken half his body weight, his personality, and his dignity. He was at least half Maine Coon. He was 22 lbs at his most robust (he was a tad overweight then but mostly muscle), had all of the markings, but was a shorthair. My dogs loved him and he loved them. They would play, snuggle, etc. We miss our Chance to this day.

There will be some adjustment time, but it will all work out!
