Sheltie Forum Pups Spring/Summer 2014

Soooo......after my thread introducing Callan and get ready to post little updates here and there....and then with the other pups also coming home (welcome Enzo), this forum will be inundated with cuteness. So I I'm proposing after the first puppy intro, that we post most of the puppy cuteness updates in one thread.

I don't mean photo updates. Those should mostly stay separate

I also don't mean specific questions new puppy owners may have relating to problems they are experiencing.

So I'll start with an example.

I'm fascinated watching Indy interact with the pup. Since Bacca died, Indy has changed in ways I can't even describe. He is just quieter somehow and somehow more relaxed. Then in comes Callan!

It's been interesting to watch Indy learn to deal with the pup

Mostly he acts like a much older bigger brother.

No, I'm not going to roll around with you. Yes, I will let you crawl on me and sniff my various parts to a point. But if you get too personal, I might curl my lip at you. And yes, I will be Mom' general, and when I hear Ah!ah! I will launch into action and herd you into place, if you are being bad! And maybe sometimes, we will just play....maybe.....

And because I'm setting an example, I'm not going crazy over lawn mowers, hair dryers (ok maybe a little). I'm the big boy in the family now. And it's my job to teach Callan.

So does this thread makes sense? I can appreciate times to share specific things on dedicated threads (eg pictures, specific concerns) but just thought that I know I'm going to have little stories to share that don't require a thread on their own). And figured others would have the same so why not share together?

Thoughts?:smile2:

I think it's a great idea! We should share puppy milestones too, like jumping on the couch, doing stairs etc. For example, Enzo attempted the couch last night and didn't even come close. I told him to try again in 3 months lol!

He can go up the 3 stairs on our porch for cookies, but never wants to go inside so not much incentive there haha

Also--how big are everyone's pups?

Enzo is 8 weeks old and is a little under 8" tall and weighs barely over 4lbs.

I'm so glad you agree with the idea!

It seemed stupid to open a thread just about Callan to share his milestones because all new puppy owners are going through the same milestones, albeit at different timelines, but all during the spring "puppy months". If each of us posted everything, you can imagine.......

So one thread to celebrate and commiserate on our 2014,puppies, yes?

Callan is 12 weeks today!

Successes: He has been with me for 3 weeks. And has had only 2 accidents inside and those were in the first two days. Not one since! I'm pretty diligent about schedule though. He really does not get a chance to make a mistake.

Progress report:

He has learned where the doors are for both cottage and home. He will come in and out without carrying.

He goes into his crate willingly at home and at cottage

He was a real trooper on the boat to the cottage and all the logistics (yes, stuffed into a crate with Indy for the boat ride).

Did not blink at the sound of hair dryer, boat engine turned on, lawn mower, whipper, blower. This is one cilled puppy so far.

He wakes a little early for my taste ..5:30. And the entire pee/feed/pee routine in the morning is a little long. But I'm now finding he does need to poo so often

His den set up at home is awesome. A crate within an xpen. I was a little worried about the cottage without having a pen to contain him but he did fine there too

Big training issues are recall and leave it! Recall is showing progress. Leave it! Not so much!

Indy acts like big brothers. If he hears me saying. Ah,ah.....he herds Callan. I haven't decided if this is good or bad. Indy rolled him over at least once.

Ok. That's my puppy update

Forgot to mention that he has short stairs totally figured out. But no more than 5 steps He can go up easy. But still hesitant about down.

Bailey is 19 weeks now so a lot bigger than your pups. He weighed in at 14 pounds yesterday! He is so different from my previous sheltie ( much more energetic!) however he seems a lot smarter at learning new things. He never barks at skateboarders, trucks, lawn mowers ( Buddy used to bark like crazy). Strangely enough he only barks in the house, to go outside or if he wants to play.

We are lucky from day one has has slept 9 hours at night and never woke up once ( he was 9 weeks when we got him) Today I slept in until 9am thinking he would get me up sooner , he never cried and he slept 10 hours :-o. I actually woke up to let him out and he seemed to have no problem holding it that long!

I wish he would slow down on eating grass, clumps of dirt and anything else he finds in the yard. I constantly have to pulls stuff from his mouth and have him "leave it"! He still occasionally eats his poop(yuck) so I have to scoop it up as soon as he's done and in the house or he may find it as a tasty snack next time he goes outside :eek2:

Brew is 19 weeks old too! <13.5 pounds

Since day one, he sleeps all night without a complaint (such a blessing!). For more than a month, no accidents, but then he developed frequent thirst and urination which went away less than 2 weeks ago. Started changing his food recently.

Such a smart boy and he finished his puppy class last week. I was invited to join the agility class :D He does very well with leash training when he hasn't just eaten, otherwise he's absolutely nuts running circles in the living room and under the dining table. I just taught him "heel" and when he really wants to heel (but I don't ask him to), and I spin in circles, he spins circles around me until he gets what he wants xD

Big training issues are recall and leave it! Recall is showing progress. Leave it! Not so much!

For "leave it", I originally put a treat on the floor with my hand cupping it. When he eventually stopped licking my hand, I clicked and gave a higher value treat, but never the one on the floor. Eventually I didn't need the cupped hand (always re-cover if he goes for the treat though) and I extended that time enough so that I could walk over and remove the object of his desires xD Idk if this is what you're doing but maybe try a different method on Callan? I just applied it to real-life circumstances last week when he tried to eat every dandelion outside and it works like a charm! ( When he eats a lot of dandelions, he has to pee like crazy.) He plops his butt down and spits out whatever's in his mouth, waiting for a treat. Works 70% of the time, unless it's concerning paper towels or puppy wipes (that's 0% xD). I hope this helps! :)

I love reading about other people's puppy experiences. I find it really helpful, reassuring and encouraging when I'm having a bad day with mine!

Pepper is 10 weeks and has settled in really well for the most part. She is a very high energy pup, compared to Honey at the same age... she really keeps me on my toes! I'm so happy that the two of them have already developed a great bond, that was the thing I was most worried about.

I've been really lucky with Pepper's sleeping, for the last week she's been going to bed around 10 and waking around 7 which fits in with me perfectly.

Her recall is shaping up really well, she could teach Honey a thing or two some days!

Toileting, however, is a whole different matter! I blame myself for starting off with puppy pads... more of a hindrance than a help I think (in her case anyway). We've had numerous accidents :(. Sometimes taking her out every half hour is not enough. We're slowly getting there though.

So fun to read! Enzo is now 9 weeks old and is settling into his personality (I think!) He's still only been home with us for a few days, but he has made himself at home.

The craziest thing is that if he isn't hungry, he doesn't eat. I know that sounds intuitive, but Bentley and Lexi are the total opposite. In fact last night Enzo was asleep in his crate on top of some treats! It is kind of hard to train when he isn't hungry--and he has had some soft stools so I'm trying not to do the whole cheese/chicken/turkey thing until he settles in a bit more. I try to reward him for things and he looks at the kibble, play bows, and runs away to be chased!

He can sit and my husband says he's starting to offer a down but I haven't tried it yet. He's also working on the "It's Your Choice" game and is doing well! Again, our training time is limited to only when he is hungry!

He has learned to go up and down the stairs if the incentive is good enough (usually if everyone is up/down), and comes when called. He also does the tunnel without a lure, which is so cute!

We've put the leash on a few times, but haven't had much time to really work on walking, etc. Again, hard to do if he isn't hungry! I tried to have him follow Lexi, but Lexi knew I had kibble and kept sitting on Enzo, hilarious but not productive!

Last night we took him to our agility class and he watched the class before us a bit. He wouldn't play with us (we brought a tug) and I turned to my husband and asked "is he worried?" (there was a dog running and lots of barking in the small building). No sooner had I said it but he slipped out of my husband's arms and ran onto the course after the dog running. Oops! Definitely not worried!

We've been taking rides in the car for a few minutes every day and he does well. Sometimes a little crying at first if he isn't sleepy, but he settles in. My husband went up to the local bar and took him. They sat on the patio and he was a total chick magnet
