I am looking for a vacuum that does a good job picking up sheltie hair. Hopefully one that wont plug up with every use. Anyone have any success with those that claim to be designed for dog hair?

Yes I have a dyson ball, with 4 shelties and 2 cats. HOLY FUR! Ive had it now almost 4 years this nov...that thing has worked great and I cant believe the amount of crap its picked up out of the carpet, and I only have a area rug as the rest of my house is either tile or wood. It has never got plugged up and I suck up alot of fur!

And I thought you were talking about a vacuum cleaner that won't attack Shelties! I swear my boys would insist on one if such a thing existed....they constantly have to bark and snap at the vacuum to keetp it at bay! Good thing they're on top of it!
I thought you meant a vacuum them wouldn't attack, too, and I thought WOW someone invented a vacuum that a Sheltie won't attack!
Anyway, we have an Electrolux, now called Aero I believe. It's great and I absolutely love it. We have 3 cats and the dog, and it really does a great job of getting the hairs and dirt, etc...

I have a Dyson ball as well - altho I do have to empty the barrel a lot and unplug the turbo head because the fur twists around it and it stops spinning.
I find using an outdoor nylon bristle broom on the carpet lifts a lot of the fur. I do it in between vacuums as sometimes I dont want the hassle of the dogs barking and attacking the vacuum.
And if anyone finds a vacuum shelties don't attack - I'm getting that one!

I have an Oreck DutchTech Canister Vacuum, 1400 Series. We've had it for nearly 10 years and have not had a single problem with it.
When we purchased it we had two northern breed dogs - our Finnish Spitz, Melody, and Malamute, Candy. There was a TON of fur everywhere; to the point that we were going through the brands you find in K-Mart, WalMart, Sears, etc. nearly once a year; talk about getting expensive.
The Oreck wasn't cheap but over the lifetime of the vacuum, we've actually saved money because we didn't have to replace our vacuum every year to year-and-a-half.
The vacuum is still going strong and I LOVE it.

dyson here..and it works great!!
I had a Oreck..musta got a lemon cuz I tossed that thing to the #2 son and he threw it out..LOL
My dogs go grab up their toys when I vac..they must think I'm gonna suck up their woobies..LOL

I also have a Dyson. Three cats and two dogs - works great. I don't have the ball one - got mine just before that one came out. But I would recommend Dyson to anyone. Their customer service is great, too. We wore out a part in ours and it was replaced (would have been cheap-ish anyway). Wasn't cheap, but we were also running through vacuums at a pace that wasn't economical.

When the time comes to replace my Oreck, which I hope is far in the distance, I may look at the Dyson. They didn't exist when we purchased the Oreck.
I wonder though, clancyh8sabby, did you have the upright or a canister style Oreck? The canister style, like what we have, has more suction power than the upright models. It also weighs next to nothing.
