I've treated my sheltie for fleas but they just don't seem to be going away. There aren't a lot by any means but the point is they aren't gone. I did use frontline because I hadn't read the forums yet to discover I should go with Revolution. She licks herself occasionally, maybe for times a day, and then afterward she gags once or twice. Is she getting hair in her throat?? Any ideas what to do about the fleas? Maybe getting the revolution from here on out will cure that problem?
 
There are a number of members who use a natural product. Emma's breeder recommended revolution, which I started, using a lower pound weight than what she is. It is possible that your girl is getting some fur stuck in her throat.
 
I just talked to my vet about this, because the fleas we thought we defeated last year are back with the nasty humidity we have had.

Her take:

She got rid of the K9 Advantix because it doesn't work as advertised.
She won't sell Revolution because it doesn't work, and they don't do combo drugs.
Frontline is all but useless.
Stopped carrying Comfortis completely.

Advantage and Cap Star are the only things she says work.

Now, I broke down last week and bought K9 Advantix for the Shelties. So far, they are flea free. I bought Advantage for my Collie, and she is also flea free.

I have ordered some fleabusters for in the house, we'll see how that works to kill off the eggs. I hadn't used anything in years, with no fleas. Last summer I took in a friends dogs, and her dogs were covered. It was several hours before I realized it, and it has been a fight since. :(
 
In response ot revolution not working...

Well my vet told me,they had issues of returning pets test positive for heartworm.It was not the medication..it was the improper way it was administered.
95% of the pets that tested positive,were long haired dogs.when you are putting this stuff on,one needs to be absolutely sure it is all the way down to the skin.

I have been using Revolution now a year,and love the product.All the dogs here have been on it,and I have not one instance of fleas,mites.And all have tested negative for heartworm.

But again,what is good for one vet office,is not the same for all.Advantage Multi,again is a another good combo topical.

Getting rid of the fleas is not just starting with the dog.Everything in your home needs a good HOT washing.Carpets need to be done,right down to the throw rugs in your home.And that is after the house has been bombed with a good fogger.

You do need to make sure all electrical items are unplugged,AC turned off. Please follow directions on these things. As there have been homes lost due to electrical spark from items.

Make sure you leave cabinets in your kitchen open,as these critters are everywhere.You would be shocked at how many eggs a day that fleas lay.
 
What to use for fleas

Mally's vet now recommends using Vectra (repells and kills for 1 month: fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Anyone else use this on their dogs?
 
Yes, Vectra is topical. Mally's vet changed from Revolution to the Vectra kills 4 species of ticks, and 3 species of mosquitoes and controls all stages of flea life cycle. Maybe Dr. Shelli can comment on Vectra. It took care of Mally's fleas, totally. (and he had fleas bad this summer).

The product is similar to advantix and is made by Summit Vetpharm. It is a topical product and has this really cool applicator. I found it to have a aweful metallic smell (i'm really sensitive to smells)in the samples I've recieved. So I've never pursued of the product because of that. Whether it works well or not I don't know not enough experience with it.:smile2:
 
Clantyrsheltie.....you also have used food grade diatomaceous earth, right?

I am seriously looking into getting this in the next couple of weeks before the ticks start back up again to sprinkle around my fenced in yard. I love that it is something I can sprinkle on the yard, and yet it doesn't harm the dogs.

Would Food Grade DE also work on your carpet for your house? Could you sprinkle it, leave it, and then afterwhile vacuum it up?
