SHELTIE HEARING

I always wonder what the world sounds like to a Sheltie. What hearing like them must be like. I was in our kitchen today, the Shelties were outside in the back yard, 3 walls and an exterior wall away and I picked up a knife which bumped another knife with a slight tinkle sound. The guys went nuts for a minute in the back yard. I cannot imagine how they even heard that noise but they did and one came running to investigate. What a world they live in...

It is a bit of a mixed bag. Dogs do better at certain frequencies but not all. Humans are better at locating the source of a sound. Here is a site that has more detail.

Thanks for the site I can totally agree about locating the sound, our dogs are horrible-- a sound on TV sends them into the back yard, sometimes even in the same room does the same-- they can hear it but have no idea where it comes from...

Since I can't edit by original response I wanted to add this-- after reading the article I wonder if the higher pitch of womens voices and "baby" talk voices get more of a response from dog than deep throated male voices. I have a moderately deep voice and sometime my dogs just look at me like WHAT event tho the know the command-- Maybe raising the pitch might get abetter response-- of course unless they are just putting me on-- they are Shelties after all and the game is the thing.

I often wonder that myself! I usually try to be extra careful and QUIET when I’m preparing their supper (breakfast is impossible lol). I CAREFULLY put their bowls on the counter to fill them and any little ting they make and I’m done for!
Blueberry also hates the dishwasher pucks…if she hears me opening the bucket they’re in she races into the kitchen barking!

Zulu is sound reactive, but I notice that it is the lower frequencies that he reacts to the most. The rumble of a big truck, low sounds from the TV. I turned down the bass on the TV, and it did help with that. But he also has quite a list of other sounds that drives him nuts!!

Yeah no way to hide getting the food ready, they know what the dishes sound like when they are moved, what the bag sounds like when it is opened- they never miss a meal prep- fortunately they don't bark--but when I take my pills in the morning Katie bar the door- it's pure chaos-- not sure what that is all about but it sure needs the Sheltie's opinion(s), well whether it needs the opinions or not I get em.

Luna can hear a bag of potato chips being opened from across two acres! I'll be in the kitchen and she'll be outside "guarding" the horses. Of course, the horses don't really need guarding, but don't try to tell that to a Sheltie. Anyway, I open a bag of chips and it's not 15 seconds until she's at the door with that "I want some, too" look on her face. I love Shelties!
