Sheltie in London City

Hello all!

This is my first post despite being a Sheltie enthusiast for years!
Our family is finally ready for a dog to join it and I have always been in love with the Shetland Sheepdog, my only question is that I live in the city of London.
Has anybody ever raised a Sheltie in a city? I do have a garden and live near a large park. I would just hate for our new family member to get bored of what we can do for them.
This would also be our first dog but I have honestly been doing research for years on how to train and raise a puppy (although I know it's different once they are really in your life!).

What do you all think? Is it possible to raise a happy healthy Sheltie from within the city? Am I just overthinking?

Any advice and wisdom is appreciated!

Welcome!
So glad you found us!

A really great book...
Dr. Ian Dunbar
Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog

Wondering how you will be able to successfully potty train... you said you have a garden? Puppies need to be taken out hourly when they are young!

I can’t see why you would have any issues raising a Sheltie if you can accommodate their excercise, potty, and training needs.

I am sure that London is a great place for dog lovers! The British are known for their love of dogs!

Don’t over think it! As long as the whole family pitches in to help you won’t regret bringing a Sheltie into your life!

Just make sure you research the breeder!

Drawing a blank on the name but there was a member here that lived in New York City so probably similar. If someone remembers that might help the poster by looking at posts by that member on issues and successes

I think it should work beautifully! I recommend The Art of Raising a Puppy by The Monks of New Skete. It's on Amazon. Also, if you do Facebook, take a look at The Wonderful Sheltie page. It was started by a delightful Englishman who has brought together more than 10,000 Sheltie lovers world wide!! Many are from your neck of the woods.

Absolutely! Shelties are smart, adaptable little dogs. Most of them do need some form of daily exercise, but a walk in the park, or a ball throw in the park often does the trick. Also, don't underestimate the power of mental stimulation. It does wonders, and shelties really thrive on learning!

Also--welcome to the forum! My best friend moved to London a few years ago and we visited--it's a lovely place!

Thank you all for such a wonderful welcome :) You have encouraged me, I really do think a Sheltie would be perfect for my family and I!

Christina - welcome to this wonderful forum - from Denmark.

It is definitely a big help with a small garden.
Shelties is a small dog of a working breed and therefore needs activity , so the park is also a + where you can do something together, it has a big need to be with us.

It's a sensitive breed so it's very important to socialize the puppy, with all the sounds / people in a big city, and if you do it with great patience at the puppy's tempo pace there are definitely no problems.

A wonderful link to us new Sheltie owners so we may better understand this little sensitive breed. (I still reading this now and then :wink2:)
