We recently bought a puppy from a kennel owner. It was kind of an impulsive buy, we knew we wanted another dog but it wasn't actually planned we just fell in love with this pup.
The previous owner told us it was a Rat Terrier. Well I guess we were just so excited to get a puppy that we didn't notice until we got home that her face didn't really look like a terrier face.
I was very curious and started doing some research and I think she has a Sheltie face! I have also noticed some other quirky Sheltie traits in her. Looking at the three color types, I figured she could be a color headed white. One thing that makes me doubt though is that she has a docked tail. I am not sure if she was born this way, or if the previous owner cut it. Also, she is supposedly (I am untrusting of what the owner told us) almost 3 months old, but if she's a Sheltie she doesn't seem big enough, or fluffy enough! Here are links to pictures, hoping for feedback on what others think.

So what do you think, Sheltie? Sheltie mix? Other?

The last one shows her short tail.
I appreciate any feedback!

I think it looks like some kind of terrier face....not sure exactly which kind though! The ones I've known have been adults, not puppies. It might be mixed, but I don't think it's a sheltie face. Very cute though!!! (Aren't all puppies?!)

Darling puppy, but I don't think there is any Sheltie in there. Looks like a Jack Russell to me with maybe a little sumthun' sumthun' mixed in. Good luck and have fun with your new puppy!

My daughter definitely thinks it is a (probably parson russell or rat) terrier mix of some kind as well. She often reads up on various breeds of dogs.

Have fun with your new puppy!

The body and coloring look like a PRT/JRT. The face is definitely not right for a PRT or rat terrier. Similar but not quite right. Rat terriers are smooth coat. PRT can be smooth, broken or rough(hard almost wiry coat) coated. . There does seem to be some sheltie characteristics in the face but definitely not a purebred.

I used to own a JRT mix and have fostered several JRT/PRT and rat terriers over the years and I would say a mix of either. It really doesn't matter in the long run. Still your puppy and will be your loyal companion. Enjoy her.

Many years ago I had a client come in with a supposed purebred sheltie they brought. I said "oh what a cute little sheltie/beagle mix". Client got so mad "why does everyone keep saying?" Turn out the "breeder" did have an intact male beagle and housed it next to the female sheltie(who really was also bred to a sheltie) when it was in season(smart:rolleyes2:). Nature found a way. DNA proved the parentage. Breeder was clueless.

I see a lot of terrier pups around here and your pup is exactly what I would expect. Over-here what is called a 'Jack Russell' comes in a multitude of forms, sizes, shapes - folded ears, pointy ears, short fur, medium fur, any colour from pure black to white with spots.

My bet would be a terrier, pure and simple, not necessarily a cross, just not breeding from show stock that matches the standard. I've seen Jack Russell's here that are as small as chihuahuas.

Cadbury's breeder had two pure Parson Jack Russells and they looked completely different to the Jacks we get around here, but all are called the same thing.

Sorry, no sheltie - but incredibly cute and I would have her in an instant.

Very cute puppy!

But I have to agree with everyone,I do believe no sheltie in him.Screams JRT or PRT. Could be a bit of chihuahua in there to.

Wishing you much happiness with him,as he sure is a cutie.:wink2:

I agree, definately no sheltie there. Sheltie pups tend to have a bigger head and not the sharper point at the nose end.

I think she is a rat terrier. If you were over here I would say a tenterfield terrier or miniture fox terrier - but definately terrier.

Sometimes terriers have their tails docked so they dont get bitten by rats or caught when they go down holes or into small cavities. Some terriers, like the Tenterfield, are born with bob-tails.
