Sheltie or Collie

I know, some of you will say this pup is all Sheltie. We have had and raised Collies for years. Have owned just two Shelties.
In my day we would call this one a "Throwback". You wouldn't keep him in the litter with his siblings.

We love this pup that is for sure. As I have said before, If he wasn't so "cotton pickin" pretty he probably would be residing somewhere else. His papers say he is a Sheltie. Definitely has Sheltie Blood lines but I still think there was a "Fox in the Henhouse". Any of you seeing him in person would need to agree somewhat with me, he has Collie blood in him.

He is approaching 18" in height with close to 40 pounds in weight. Our last Collie was 19" and weighed between 45 and 50 pounds depending if it was summer or winter.

Laddie has "0" Sheltie characteristics. They
develop their sense of smell and much of their intelligence over two or three years. Chip is almost 2 1/2 years old. At this point in time he has more "Moxie" than Laddie and that is expected. I can hide a toy from Laddie, that isn't going to happen with Chip.

Those things said: Laddie has no Sheltie trot or wiggle walk, he walks and runs as a Collie, he has a Collie nose, face, and head. He has a Collie bark, he "travels" as a Collie. He does "herd" Chip but we had Collies that had the same herding instinct.

He is totally in Love with my wife which gives him a "leg up". If there was no other attribute in his favor that would be everything, my wife needs all the love she can get at this time.

Throwback Cubby has to appreciate Laddie for exactly your points. I can make exactly the same distinctions between Melli and Cubby as you make here.

I think he looks Sheltie, he has a Sheltie head - the nose is too short and the stop above his nose is too pronounced for a Collie. He's just going to be a big boy - we've had Shelties on here that have been 21". On the Sheltie Forums height/weight spreadsheet the average height is 16" - which means there's an awful lot of Shelties over 16" (so much for the standard) - 17% are 18" or over so there's an awful lot of throwbacks out there.

He looks so much like my Bailey we just lost who was definitely oversized for a Sheltie but was all Sheltie. He was often mistaken for a small collie when we were out.

Still looks like a Sheltie to me. I am no expert, but my neighbor has two Collies, and your Laddie looks nothing like them. He is one big handsome fellow!

I got nothin'. He looks like a taller sheltie to me. And they ALL learn at different paces- even litter mates. He is awful cute and I sorta just wanna kiss him on the nose.

He is all sheltie. He is just going to be bigger that's all. The nose says it all. As others have said, it is too short and is more curved. A Collie's nose is longer and straighter.

Just a big Sheltie, in my opinion. My Dickens is 20.5 inches and 43 pounds. Everybody thinks he's a Collie, and to the tell you the truth, he looks quite a bit like one. However, Sheltie owners and former Sheltie owners always get him right.

I personally think that the bigger ones have better dispositions.

Well,
I knew many of you folks wouldn't think the way I am on this, you need to remember I said Laddie has Sheltie blood lines and I think he has some collie thrown in there also.
Disposition is yet to show it's face. Laddie is happy 24/7 if mama or I don't need to "bawl him out". We bought an inexpensive ????? Agility outfit. He and Chip love the "tunnel". Laddie will run the weave and half the time he will jump the bar. He looks at the ring to jump through then looks back at it as though to say, "What the heck did I do that for?"
He is big, muscular, hard as nails, if he runs into you after a romp it feels like someone hit you with a very large board. If he gets out any door before we can catch him and tie him up and he sees a bicycle rider, we have many in front of our home, he will chase them for blocks down the street ignoring our calls/yells to him all the time until he is ready to come back. It infuriates me. If anyone gets hurt because of him, he is gone from our premises. We just hope nothing ever happens. He is chained most of the time when we have him outside. Chip seldom ever needs being tied. They both love to go for walks on a leash.

I can only think of one dog we owned in the last 40 years that we couldn't train. This one pushes all the buttons.

I am not looking for any more comments. I mostly said what I wanted to say as information.

Please consider coming up with a better system for containing Laddie. This is not only irritating for cyclists and infuriating for you, but it places him in a great deal of danger. I think the likelihood of anyone getting hurt "because of him" is far less than that of him being struck and killed by a car.
