Sheltie recently started rolling in poop

I have a two-year old sheltie who has always been very well-mannered, dainty, and clean; he never behaved in a gross manner in any way, even when other dogs around him would do things like roll around on dead animals. However, recently (within the past month), he has started rolling around in poop. He has done this 4 or 5 times, and my husband and I are completely perplexed because he NEVER did this before, even though he had plenty of opportunity to. Why would he suddenly start doing this, and what can we do to get him to stop? We were able to catch him in the act once and reprimand him; usually this is all it takes for a behavior to cease, but he continues to do this. Bathing a sheltie is quite an undertaking, so it would be nice to break him of this behavior, as we have to bathe him every time! Any advice on why he's suddenly doing something that he never did, and how to make him stop?
 
Mya has rolled in poop twice since I got her.
I know what majorly stinks to us is probably perfume to them.

I don't comprehend thier rolling in poop....but some dogs are notorious for this.

go out with her every time outside and put her on long rope, stop her every time she starts doing it... clean up poop as soon as it happen... go for many brisk walks on a leash as opposed to let her play in a yard alone...
look into what have changed recently in your pup's environment...
My pups thankfully had not got into this habit but I know many dogs do enjoy good "aromatherapy" session, since it is self rewarding behavior you must not let it happen again and consistency will be your solution...

I've been lucky, so far my shelties don't roll in anything, but their dog friends do when we go hiking with them, especially Jesse. Our last hike Jesse rolled in some really foul smelling poo. We kept wondering where the manure smell was coming from, she stunk so bad. Jessie also enjoys rolling on dead things, such as fish. That was another really pleasant car ride home for us, smelling the rotting fish in Jesse's fur. :dead:

I don't think there's anything you can do, except keep an eye on them. Sadie and Ginny were both poo eaters but cleaning up as soon as they go has prevented that from happening, for the most part. If the rolling is only happening in your yard I would suggest picking up poo as soon as it happens.
 
I know that dogs do this to mask their scent. It's some sort of inbred thing to ward off other animals. But, I don't know why your dog would just start. I can say that my puppy did this a couple weeks ago. No idea what kind of poo it was but down she went, spread it on the side of her face and neck and then rolled in it. :dead:
