I went to the ASSA webpage:

There are no sheltie rescues listed for Arkansas. :( I live near the Arkansas/Texas border and about two hours (give or take some) from the Oklahoma line. Oklahoma doesn't have one either. All the ones in Texas are far away from me. My dad works in Oklahoma a lot, so if there was one around Lawton I could have maybe checked there.

How else might I go about looking to find a sheltie rescue besides one listed on their site? Also, after Googling I've looked over the applications for a lot of the rescues. Why do they want a groomer reference? I've not actually taken Smudge to the groomer, but the groomer is the one doing his dips. Also, do they actually really come to your house? If so, what for? Would the fact that I have a sheltie with medical problems lessen the possibility that they would let me have one?

I'm weighing my options. I've very torn on this getting a new dog thing. If I decide to it won't be after the first of the year, but I'm researching now. I'm thinking maybe Smudge is lonely because when he's outside he'll stand at the gate and whine horribly when he sees the neighbor’s cat (the neighbor’s cat, not the random stray ones - that I've finally talked my mom into getting rid of! :biggrin2:)
 
I've never heard of an animal rescue asking for a groomer reference. They usually ask for your vet and 3 other references.

They visit your home to make sure you have a safe home and environment for the rescue dog. Having a dog with medical problems shouldn't effect your chances, unless you're not treating your dog for his condition. Which I know you are, so no worries there.

Usually the lack of a tall fenced in yard is why most responsible people are turned down.

Ohhhh there are some great dogs listed at that Sheltie Zen rescue! I'd be after that little Cole (if I didn't already have a houseful!). He's young enough to be a good playmate to Smudge and the problems are mainly socialization/exposure so its just a matter of patience. I like the little double merle too.
 
I just adopted a rescue a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure but I think how you've handled Smudge's many health issues might be an asset when applying to adopt. You've taken such great care of him and made sure he got vet care when he needed it. Some rescues will let you adopt if you don't have a fence. It depends on the dog and how great a flight risk they feel there is although a secure fence is the best option.

They come to your house to make sure that the information you gave on the application is accurate-that you live where you say you live,you have a fence if you said you did etc.I can't believe they ask for a groomer reference either. Mine didn't and if they would have I'd have been in trouble too as Fergus and my previous shelties have never been to the groomers. With all the horror stories I've heard of what some groomers have done to shelties I just feel more comfortable doing it myself. I did have to give my vet as a reference and also two other personal references.
 
WOW Cole is beautiful! Wonder why he was turned in? He looks to be very well bred, and someone even went though the hassel of doing his ears...hmmm....
 
Cole and Kaia are both great choices for pals for Smudge. Unless you want to give the poor older sheltieA loving forever home for her final years. A senior needing a loving forever rest home.:cry:I can't believe she was turned in, but some people just don't want to be there for the final years?? I'll never understand it.:cry:
 
I did not have to give a groomer reference- good thing since previous dogs were short hair and didn't go to the groomer either. definitely a vet ref and usually some personal refs. and yes, they do come to the house, basically to make sure that you are prepared to have a dog and that all of the info on your application was correct. Happy - I went to the shelter and picked him up. Callie- the rescue people brought her to the house and observed her reactions to me and to Happy. if there had been any problem, she probably would have gone back with them but everything went well so she's here forever now :smile2:

That little Cole is a cutie. I agree Lightplum, why is he there...........and Raney, what a good looking senior...........I will never understand it either. How, HOW do people give any pet, and a Sheltie especially, up? In fact, when Ron first told me there were Sheltie Rescues, I thought he was trying to "put one over on me." It was just inconceivable to me that a Sheltie could end up in a rescue.

I'd take that Raney if I were closer. Just to give the 'pup' a good home for the final years!
