A. Sable (shadeds in particular)
Rest are all sort of equal in my book and some appeal to me while others do not.
I did this very survey in 2 major FB groups. The answer was overwhelmingly sable, tri, and then blue merle.
While it appears there is always a home for a sable, I was suprised to see the "black dog" tri rank so high but bi-black ranked lower. Blue merles seem to appeal vastly more than bi blues.
I came to mine round about. I loved blue merles because I had a blue merle Aussie but ended up with a tri and then a sable. While I still don't care for tri very much, I have come to appreciate the sweet expressions of sables.

We had Tri's and Sable Collies for years.
Wife and daughter actually prefer Sable, I love the black Tri and the Sable Tri (Black, Brown, and Sable)
Many times these also have white in their coat. I suppose that means they are "Quads".

I like them all but have had two sables and one blue merle. My Collie baby is also blue merle.

I think the prettiest girl I had was my shaded sable...(though she was classified on her papers as tri-but that I guess was inaccurate) She had black fur, the ends were reddish and the roots were tan...her fur was gorgeous. In the sun she had a golden cast to her. She was greyish as a puppy, Sometimes I regret not breeding my 2nd, but probably wouldn't have gotten pups that look like her. Kaleigh's parents had the same coloring as my former girl. Kaleigh was a dark chocolate brown pup but became glossy black. Kaleigh is tri-so hidden gene coming through, doesn't resemble either of her parents at all by coat, but she looks like her dad in the face, but the body of her mom, although bigger. Each of my girls has been a different color, so I guess I will have to get a blue merle if I add another, ha.

sable merle dog- he would be a shaded or mahogany sable if he didn't express the merle gene
mahogany or shaded sable (or Ferg's quad- there aren't sable tris)
I know that this site is technical but it has great pictures and explanations of sheltie colors.
For the survey, I love all the colors that shelties come in and I aspire to the sheltie rainbow- with 4 out of 6 (not counting CHWs), I am getting close

I've always been partial to a sable - I think because the colour just shows up their form and their face so well. Since getting Tully I really love the shaded mahogany sable. So many people have commented about how much they love her colouring, it's so eye catching and dramatic.
