Sheltie with a black eye.

So sorry to hear this, Jessica. The silver might help...I've used it on the horses for stubborn rashes. I would definitely see the new vet, but if you need more, do give a call to Connie's dermatologist. I saw her too when Scruffy had mange for months that we couldn't cure and she was wonderful. She may even be able to help you over the phone, or do a phone consult -- you have plenty of pictures you could email her.

Sending good thoughts for little Smudge!

poor smudge

I was hoping that this thread not being updated meant no more flare ups!
Smudge is soo lucky to have you for a Mommy; you are trying everything you can to help him (I'm sure he knows that). I hope the silver helps. Good luck with the new vet!

Give Smudge a great big hug from me and Gavin

Cindy

I'm so sorry to see that Smudge's dips aren't working. I, too, would recommend seeing a new vet. Typically just having a gut feeling about (any) medical provider is pretty spot on. You've tried the dips, and weren't too thrilled about this vet. I wouldn't even proceed with the dip on the 14th--just head to the new vet asap.

I also think that consulting w/a dermatologist could be a great help. It's possible that your vet knows some local people as well.

Good luck, we're thinking of you and Smudge!

I've not tried the new vet. Smudge has one more dip (Oct. 14th). I was going to wait until after the last dip to change vets. If his eye is looking worse come Monday morning then I'm going to go looking for the new vet's office. It's not bad right now, but it always starts this way. It spreads out of control very fast. I could put him on Interceptor, but I'm going to wait and see what my new vet thinks. The dips have obviously got to go, as they are not doing any good. There's another kind of medicine he could take (I'll have to look up the name later), but I refuse to let him have it. I don't know if he has the MDR1 gene. I have the test kit, but I haven't sent back my sample yet.

When I do go to my new vet I'm bringing pictures of his eye and how it's progressed. It went from mild, to moderate, to severe, to moderate, to mild, and now it's rearing its ugly head again. This isn't how a puppy should spend his first six months of his life. :(

Really smart idea to take pictures to show the history Jessica. I'm sorry to hear he is seemingly having a relapse. Hang in there, and hug Smudge for all of us!

OK Jessica, go and buy some Colloidal Silver - I am serious. I use it ALL the time for EVERYTHING on myself and on my dogs topically and internally. It is a natural disinfectant, anitbacterial, antifungal and antiviral agent - and it works. You would not believe the number of people that have tried it and have come back to me stating how it has helped them AND it is not expensive at all.
Here is a link to it and DM:

This guy only tried it topically. I would also give Smudge some internally. My two get it almost everyday, just a bit as a preventative.
You can google colloidal silver and mange and lots will come up. You will have to check how much to give him (they should have a recommendation on the bottle or with the health food store)

Wow...I just checked out that link, and it is super promising for Smudge!

I seriously just want to roll into a ball and cry. I thought Smudge was doing so much better. We were having vet problems, but I was sure he was on his way to recovery. Now this:

I said a day or two ago how his fur was turning purple again. That's always how it starts. I didn't notice the fur loss last night! I took those pictures this morning. In a day or two he'll have a much larger bald spot if history repeats itself. There's no hair in that picture where there was hair before. It always starts to crack and bleed, and then he will scratch it, making it worse.

He was just at the vet Wednesday! THE DIPS ARE NOT WORKING. I'm tired of vet techs playing doctor and groomers acting like I have an attitude problem when I ask questions. You know, MAYBE if you were doing your stupid skin scrapes this would not have happened! MAYBE you would have noticed that the mites were still there. I'm just throwing that out there for ya.

Somebody please help me. :( I don't know what to do.

Is this on the same side as before Jessica? If so, I can't believe the improvement since the last pics I saw. You are getting a jump on it before it gets like it did before.. If the silver works (& I think it will), i think I'd keep him on it for a long time to come...at least til he's an adult and his immune system has fully matured..

Jess.
We are so sorry to read about this flare up again with Smudge. There is some very helpful info here that every one has shared, and glad that you ordered the silver for him. I will keep him & you in our prayers.
But..girl....go to the new vet.I would not even bother with the next dip~ Get his records, take your pictures and go to the new vet.

Hugs to you,and a big one to Smudge.

ditto to all the good advice.

Tonight his eye doesn't seem any better or worse. I'll probably take more pictures in the morning (only if I see any changes though).

Do I have to go to my old vet's office to get the records? Can the new vet's office just ask the other vet's office to fax them over? That's going to be really awkward. :uhoh: I don't want to leave on a bad note. I was going to still use them to get flea medicine since they are so much closer.

I will call the dermatologist. I promise. After not going to sleep until 3 this afternoon (and then waking up at 8:30 to go to work!) this is what I think I'm going to do. There's a vet's office in another town where I know where it's at. My friend's daughter takes her yorkie there all the time. Everybody I've talked to has said that it's the best vet's office in the area. So since I know where it's at, and people are saying good things, I will try that one. After I get out of the vet's office I'll call and see what the dermatologist thinks. Since all the offices are closed until Monday I'll have to wait until then to call for an appointment.
