Shelties and chickens

=O

That is.....THEE cutest picture I have ever seen!!

I really don't see Shiloh having any issues...if this is in his "norm" and he's used to it growing up with them...he'll be fine. It's not in their nature to be aggressive, where as German Shepherds(for the most part) have that little anger gene in them from being bred for use being police dogs.

I hope everything turns out good tho!
And welcome! :biggrin2:

The chickens are a very large breed anyway (Buff Orpington), so that is part of the reason he looks so small.

shiloh is soo cute!! I love the pic of him with the chickens. I would also like to have chicken one day.

We thoroughly enjoy having chickens around. We refer to them as "country goldfish" because they're such a joy to just watch as they wander around the yard scratching up food. Add to that the nice fresh brown eggs that we get every day, and it's a really nice addition to life. Once you've had really fresh free-range eggs, it's hard to go back to store-bought eggs.

Just to show that Shiloh doesn't have to "work" the chickens all day long, here's a photo of him relaxing in our office (where he spends most of the time).

He looks like he was always meant to be there! How cozy. I live in Canada, and right now I wish I was relaxing like that in front of a fireplace! I'm jealous!

what a lil cutey!!!

take a ton of pictures when he's that age, they grow up so fast,
you gotta get a video of shiloh herding the chickens.

i doubt you'll have any problems with shiloh being around chickens and farm animals. its practically natural for shelties to be around chickens

I just checked, and he's sitting out under an oak tree where we toss some scratch feed for the chickens. It's as though he knows that it's his job to watch over them - pretty cool. He stays pretty close to them as the flock moves around the yard.

We have a water bowl outside for Shiloh, and the chickens have discovered it also, so it's become a community drinking spot. Shiloh sometimes goes into the chicken coop and tries to drink from the chickens water, but I discourage him from doing so. Chickens are nice, but they are not the cleanest of animals. I'd rather that he just drink from his own water bowl.

I'd have to agree with both McGuiregirls and Chris, keep an eye on him but I'd be really surprised if he started showing aggression, especially since you're obviously getting him used to them at such a young age.

At the facility where we go for agility training the also offer a number of herding classes. Dogs have the opportunity to herd all sorts of live stock including sheap, cows, ducks and geese and I think chickens. :smile2:

They also offer some interesting clicker training classes. In an advanced class you can actually learn to clicker train chickens. There's even a tiny chicken agility course

Try Turkeys

I first introduced my sheltie to Turkeys, which I must say are not at all afraid of dogs and don't run. They actually did the chasing of him. Now, chickens are of no concern and he would rather just keep his distance. You might want to see if you know someone who has a Turkey that would stand up to him and that might be a good enough lesson to not chase the chickens. Now the sheep just run, and he thinks that is great fun and I don't think that will ever change.

I definitely don't think you will have to worry about him killing any. I've only seen one sheltie kill something. It was a mole and she thought it was a really cool toy and grab it. She immediately dropped it and ran and never went near another one. They are definitely not the killing type.

Good luck!
