Hi
What's the experience out there with Shelties and swimming?
I've never had a Sheltie that was a swimmer. Every Sheltie that I ever encountered would not go near pools or lakes. Water was for drinking, and maybe to help spread mud a little more evenly!
We opened up the cottage this weekend. I've noticed that Indy seems to be taking far too much interest in the water on the river, and a couple of times looked like he was getting ready to jump right in! At the least, instead of walking down the middle of the dock, he likes to "walk on the edge". I can easily see Bacca coming up beside him and shoving him easily into the water.
A couple of problems:
1) We don't have a "beach". Our shoreline starts at 6 feet of water and quickly dips to 30 then 50 feet depth. To get in and out of the water, requires climbing up a swim ladder. The dogs cannot just walk their way to the shore.
2) The water temperature is currently 50 degrees. Brrrr! I don't relish the idea of having to take an early spring swim if Indy decides the water looks great!
So, what are the chances that a Sheltie will purposefully take the dive? Do Shelties have the same instinct as other "water" dogs in knowing how to swim, even if they've never done it before? (I'm trying to figure out if I would have to dive in after him to save him, or whether or not I would have the time to coax him back close to the dock in order to fish him out, without having to jump in)

That's the part I'm interested in.
