Shelties hate paw-shake?

Koji absolutely hates doing parlor tricks (beg, bow, shake, roll over). But has no problem doing the typical stuff (sit, down, etc).

So, it's funny as heck making him do parlor tricks because you can see him thinking, "really mom? do i have to?"

BTW, he does shake and we even got him to do the correct paw for the correct hand. I can't get him to do a high five though.

That's funny, we taught Bentley to high five and now he doesn't know how to shake--just high five.

Maybe that's why Mozart's refusing to do it too. It bruises the sheltie ego! :lol: I know for sure it's not sensitive paw problem cuz he would let me hold same paw for 15 minutes straight to do grooming. He would also let us hold his front paws up to "dance". As for the paw-shake, now he is offering muzzle shake instead! :rolleyes2:

Brandi & Brady paw shake very well and were easy to teach. Brandi loves to fetch a tennis ball and catch it in her mouth - but Brady on the other hand does not seem to get the concept of catch at all. Each Sheltie has a unique personality and his/ her own special talents. I'm sure Mozart has a few little talents up his sleeve - even if he won't paw shake!
 
Paw shake

My two oldest boys Shamus and Shasta are quick learners, and took to it fairly quickly. Now all three love their food. But Shadow has sensitive feet and it took him a little longer and he still gives me his hand hesitantly. I have always asked them for their hand.

Ginny is fine with having her paws handled but doesn't like to shake paw. We can coax her to do it but she never really wants to for some reason.

Edan won't do parlor tricks either. It's actually funny when family members ask him to roll over or play dead and he looks at them like they are nuts.

Agility and obedience 'tricks' aside, I've been able to teach him to spin right and left, high five, and dance (spin in a circle on his back legs).
 
Guess it really is a sheltie thing. Most don't get the point. I'm still working at it with Mozart. He seems to know what is asked of him but he now choose to give me the sad eyes. Make me feel like I'm abusing him! :rolleyes2:
 
Merlin didn't like having his paws touched as well, so I deliberately taught him 'give paw' 'shake' 'high five' to get him used to having his paws touched. It turned it into a positive thing and now I can hold and touch his paws any time.

He also watched Cadbury who likes having his paw held while being fussed and has just started offering his pair when you are stroking him, and mum tried him on a double high-five the other day.

I have the weirdest pair.....
 
My boys LOVE doing tricks, they can not wait and keep asking when when when.. we did not arrive to this by accident though.... just matter of making it fun and joy and be persistent with small sessions and small challenges
Shake now comes handy, we are full of snow and boys get their paws stuck with ice a lot.
