Shelties vs. Collies

Shelties to Collies

We know of both those rescues and yes, they seem wonderful. Unfortunately, they do not have any Shelties for us at this time. The ones are much older and we do not have a fenced in yard.

We will continue to be on the lookout for a large Sheltie or if anyone can direct us to where we should be looking, that would be great too.

It's been so many years since I had a Collie but are they playful until what age? Do they run around like Shelties? (I don't mind the running around).
 
Shelties are there own little unique breed

Shelties are actually NOT miniature collies, though we tend to think of them as this. If you watch discover channel on shelties, it'll tell you about them, as well as reading the "your purebreed puppy" guide. Both of these things will tell you that they come form a mixture of different dogs :)

Here's the real difference: Shelties and Collies are both very intelligent. However, a Collie uses her intelligence to do nice things for you - but a Sheltie uses her intelligence to get away with stuff! :lol: It's a bit of a joke, but by and large, I think it's true.

I also find Collies to be a lot more "clingy" than Shelties. They want to be next to you, they want to be on top of you, they want to be touching you all the time. Shelties, on the other hand, generally want to be near you (think: the dog that follows you from room to room while you do chores and just watches), but they don't necessarily want to be touching you.

Which type of collies are you referring to as stupid? It's been proven multiple times that Border Collies are #1 in intelligence. I've had Border Collies for most of my life and can tell you that they can learn things on their own that you wouldn't think a dog could learn. Plus I've never met a slow border collie, Sass my first one when I was a kid took me me when she was old and she went and ran EVERYWHERE with me, she wouldn't me out of her sight. I'm interested in shelties because I want a herding type of dog that could do agility and that isn't as work minded or need as much room as a border collie and a sheltie seemed to be the best solution. Plus they are as pretty as a border collie, especially as the bi black ones.

The thread is talking about Collie Roughs, which Shelties are often compared to because of the visual similarities.
