Should I rehome?

I only have one sheltie and I think he's quite lonely. We're out of the house 10 hrs a day now, and at home we are so busy that we can't train or pay attention to him. Life just became too hectic for a dog and its not going to get better until after we move this summer.

He constantly whines, barks and squeals: when he needs to pee, when he wants food, when we leave the room, when he's bored, etc. Our whole family is confined to the living room because my sheltie can't stand being alone. Combined with that is nervousness outside the home, and territorial aggression towards other dogs. I know its probably anxiety disorder but the rest of my family simply is too fed up to deal with it and we don't have the money to hire trainers and such. He also doesn't sleep at night (since he sleeps during the day) and my poor parents haven't slept in ages because he keeps bothering them at night. Though I love him and all, my mother is going out of her mind because of him.

He's still a teen so he may grow out of it, but he may also not. Is it time to rehome him? Shelties and other herding dogs aren't very popular where I live (everyone wants a purse-dog here) so it may be hard to find a home, and I really don't want to send him to the shelter. Any advice?

Please don't send him to the shelter. If you truely can't provide for him, talk to local sheltie rescue groups. Only you can answer the question in the end as whether to keep him or not. I'm assuming you have taken him through puppy classes etc. and that hasn't helped?

Your pup is right at that adolescent age where you want to kill them because they seem to forget all of their training. Sadly, this is the age that many people give up their dogs, not realizing that its a part of growing up and that they usually grow out of these behaviors.

That being said, if you can't make the time to train your dog, then maybe it's best if he were in a home with people who are willing and able to put the effort into training him.

I highly advise against sending him to a shelter. I'm sure if you at least do some research into your area, that you could find a sheltie rescue near to your area. You owe him at least that much.

Have you tried crating him at night so he doesn't bother people? If you haven't been crating him, and start, he may whine a bit at first, but he should settle down and sleep once he realizes he isn't going to get any attention. It should also force him to sleep at night, as there's nothing else to do in a crate.
How about toys? There are kongs and other interactive toys which can be filled with food to help occupy his time.
Where about are you located? If you'd like to try to work things out with him once you are moved, maybe someone here is fairly close to where you live and could take him until after you move.
If you're truly fed up, and don't think you can work through this with him, I would first contact his breeder, and let her know you can no longer keep him, and see if she would like to have him back to rehome. Most good breeders will take puppies they have bred back for the life of the dog, and will rehome them in a good home. If that doesn't work out, I would then contact your local sheltie rescue, and surrender him to them, as they will work with him, and find a wonderful home for him. If you don't know of a relatively local sheltie rescue, please post where you are so someone can send you contact information to the one closest to you.

Where will you be re-locating to? I would be willing to help you,in some basic training here. Please do not take him to a shelter. He can even come here for social times.

If you are in the Florida area,I can put you in touch with two very dear freind of mine that will take him.

How old, exactly is your dog?

Has he been neutered?

Where are you located?

Did you get him from a reputable breeder, and if so, have you contacted them about your problems?

If you could please answer these questions, we can try and help you out.

Yes some additional info would be great.Theres a load of wealth here, and many have folks in thier access that can help you~

There are SOOOO many people here on the forum who will do anything they can to help you out :yes:. Be patient and give them the info they need to properly guide you.

Here's praying for a quick resolution! :wink2:

I can only echo what everyone else is saying and it sounds to me like there is not a sheltie rescue on your area. Where are you located? I am sure someone here can give you some help if you decided to rehome him. I would hate to see him go to a shelter.

He is a teenager right now. If you truly feel that you do not have the adequate time to train him, then you should return him to the breeder.

Sadly, this is why most dogs this age end up in shelters
