Skin Funk?

Bacca has a skin condition that is more than dandruff. I had a Sheltie in the store today with exactly the same condition. She told me that her previous groomer told her this was common with Shelties.

Its like excema for dogs, mostly on the hind end. It's not dry like dandruff. the flakes seem a little oily actualy. It's like excema but oilier. The skin is a little bumby underneah, but not hugely so. And it's alway on the rump.

Does anyone have any experience with this skin condition and any remedy?
 
I hadn't heard of it before. I started using Earthbath Mediterranean Magic. It has oatmeal and aloe -- really seems to soothe Annie's itchy allergy feet in pollen season.
 
Isn't he hypothyroid?
Are his meds all still checking out, etc? Poor guy, hope he feels (and looks) better soon. Although he always looks great in his pics
 
Yes, he is. He's due for his next round of blood work in about 30 days

Do you think its related? Should I warn this Shelie owner that her dog might be too?

What do you think about the groomer commentr that this is common in Shelties.​
 
I don't know.. I don't trust random comments made by strangers.
but I assume skin flakes may come because of a medical condition not grooming issues usually?
Plus the client may have just got something lost in the communication with that other groomer.
I would definitely discuss all of that with the Vet whom you trust.
 
Thyroid.

Thyroid dogs tend to get greasy, flaky skin, particularly over the back. Then people think "dandruff" and add conditioner, which makes it worse. Black dogs also seem to have worse dandruff. Unrinsed shampoo will also get icky over time as well.

Yep. My first sheltie had this and that's how we knew she had thyroid issues.

Yes! Totally agree. This sounds just like my setter.
 
Well, that makes sense because Bacca is hypothyroid....maybe his meds need balancing. He is due to for his next round of blood work in about a month.

I did more research on this, and I do believe Bacca's skin funk IS due to his hypothyroid.

This makes me want to see if I can find the woman who came in and give her a head's up to get her dog checked.
