Skin Irritation

Sid just started on a grain free diet and I haven't been seeing him scratch his face like he used to but he used to scratch sooo much around his mouth that he would get sores and big dry patches.

He was groomed two days ago and this dry patch appeared around his eye today. It's very flaky and white. Do any of you have issues with your dog's skin? I know that the breed is known to have dry skin and such but what can I do to help? I feel so bad and it's unsightly.

Theories:

1. Thyroid is always a good one in this breed, but the hair loss is not specific like that. The hair just kind of thins out and gets greasy, some dogs get scaly, icky skin with it.

2. DM is another one. That is a very specific hair loss pattern, but around the eyes, especially the inside of the eyes is one of the places.

3. Just existing as a black dog can cause skin issues. Lots of black dogs have scaly skin, I don't know why.

4. It could also just be shampoo residue that has dried and is flaking off. I don't shampoo faces, but some people do.

I am wondering if he had an allergy to the shampoo that the groomer used?

That's what I was also thinking. I forgot to ask them to use a hypoallergenic shampoo. I know his skin is very sensitive.

But he is also licking/chewing on his paws and I'm pretty sure that's a sign of some sort of skin allergy?

Is he still doing it?

our shepard has skin irritations everywhere so i'm used to it by now but her problem is a immune problem. She is on many differnt pills like enzymes and such that help her immune system. I think its usually in older large breeds though but it may be something to look into. It's not serious they have things that help them out much like people.

Hope this helps a bit!

If he has had a reaction to the shampoo around his eyes, it would stand to reason that he may have a reaction on his feet. He would have been standing in the shampoo in the tub.
