put chicken in set it and forget it machine and fan was not turned on. dog never exhibited panic unlike tonight. She was pacing and jumped up on couch and up my chest shaking like a leaf and panting. We now have kitchen fan on, door open and electronic air cleaner on.

She is now starting to settle down.

How sensitive are dogs noses to even the slighted smoke? shelties more apt to panic then other breeds?
 
I have heard that dogs sense of smell is so much stronger than ours, so, yes, she probably did smell it and it scared her, she was trying to warn you it seems to me and that is one reason for her panic.

Shelties are fairly high strung, so, I would say maybe prone to more panic than say, Labs, but, all Shelties have their own personality.
 
I don't know about smoke, but my Forrest has developed a terrible fear of the oven & it's starting to transfer to a fear of the stove in general. He won't walk through the kitchen to go out if the oven is on now, if he has to he races through to get away from it. I make him sit a few feet from the back door in the kitchen so Roxie can go out ahead of him (Ladies first) and if the oven is on he just shuts down.

I think it traces back to the oven setting off the smoke alarm which is torture for him.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell...way greater than humans. I have often wondered how they cope with all the scented things that humans love...like scented candles, sprays, perfumes, etc. And I suspect that smoke is an inherent fear in many animals...because fire is so dangerous.

Also the noise that smoke alarms make is horrible...even for humans who are not as sensitive to noise as dogs. Our smoke alarm has gone off a couple of times when I have burnt toast in our toaster and our little ones go totally bomkers. Simba now growls at the toaster every time I take it out of the cabinet to use it...he treats it as the "enemy".

One night Deska was barking like crazy in the middle of the night and I got really angry with him and yelled at him to be quiet. Half an hour later fire trucks came roaring into my unit complex. One of the properties around the corner (about 6 townhouses away) burnt to the ground! Now if I actually had gotten up and investigated I might have been able to call the fire brigade before it was too late. I can only imagine Deska smelt the fire, because if he was awoken by noises then surely the neighbours would have been woken first.
 
I had bits of exploded potato in the bottom of my oven, and the next time I used it I had forgotten about it. The house smelled burnt for awhile, and my very new puppy was very agitated. I actually praised him, as I decided I'd rather have him alert at that than ignore it.
 
I don't think the smell of smoke bothers Shelby as much as the smell of something "hot". Especially when we are in a small area such as our camper. Whenever I get the toaster out and turn it on she acts all flaky. She doesn't do this at home only in the camper. And yes I have set off the smoke alarms plenty of times at home and in the camper. When that happens she just will come over to me or DH and just sit by us.
 
I'm guessing it just depends on each individual dog. Some shelties fetch, some don't, some are sensitive, some aren't. Mine is more sensitive to sound than smell (unless food is involved).

Case in point, there is a huge brush fire in the mountains a few miles north of me and I can see the flames and smell it burning and there are ashes falling out of the sky...and he acts like nothing is out of the ordinary. Go figure!
 
I was cooking breakfast for dinner the other night, and the kitchen got pretty smokey as I was cooking some sausage. Callie had been outside, and when she came in, she started to act all upset and tried to go downstairs (the door was shut and she couldn't), which she'll sometimes do if she knows she's in trouble.

We couldn't figure out what was wrong, and then I realized is was probably the smell bothering her. I was cooking bacon a while back and set off the smoke detector (which is tied to an alarm system), and it went off and we couldn't get it stopped. It turned out to be a malfunction with the unit, but Callie and I ended up outside in the cold while my husband was on the phone with the alarm company. I think she was relating the smell of the smoke to that awful noise -- and was terrified that it would go off again.
 
When you consider that the average dog can smell 1 drop of urine in 10,000 gallons of water - you can just imagine how horrid the smell of burning food or scented candles smell!
