Slight watery eye...

I've noticed for a couple months now, that Tasia's right eye always looks a little watery. I am thinking it may be some sort of an allergy. There is no redness, irritation, nothing, other than her right eye always looks a little glassy. I use a warm, wet washcloth and wash her face daily, just to keep her cool and feel good.

Just wondering if anybody might have some thoughts. There isn't really any drainage of any kind except if her eye waters a little more than usual. She does get the normal 'eye boogers' that I clean off when she gets her face washed.

I don't think this calls for a trip to the vet, but wondered if anybody else has had experience with this, possible cause, and reassurance.

Tasia is 5, perfect health, happy, active, couch potato....all things sheltie.

sounds like it to me...my previous two would get hay fever...they would sneeze and get more gookie eye drainage...especially around fall here when ragweed is a problem. During fire season, if we had any smoke cvg...both mine had issues with eyes being excessively watery. But then it affects all of us.

Kaleigh- when summer hit last yr and she was just a new lil pup, her right eye tearduct would get a little clogged. And I did the warm compresses to open it up -she had more watery eyes during summer, and Vet said most likely allergies as no other adverse signs. This summer no issues with her so far.
 
Tear ducts can get clogged and cause the watery eye you are describing. Use a warm wet wash cloth and very gently rub the tear duct area in a circular motion. Do this a few times daily. Usually this will open the duct, but if the problem gets really serious and is causing too much fluid backup you can always have your vet flush the duct open.

No tear ducts!

I don't post often but this thread got me thinking. Our Casey has always had "crusty" areas under his eyes. When he was under sedation for a dental cleaning, I asked his vet to check his tear ducts. Oddly, he said that he found that Casey did not have any lower tear ducts. We continually to have to wipe his eyes to remove the built-up tears and he hates it! Has anyone ever heard of this?

UPDATE - Slightly Water Eye

Well, I was thinking it was allergies, so I didn't freak out and rush her to the vet, just a benedryl here and there and couldn't really notice a difference.

Last Saturday, Tasia and her sister-cat had their yearly check up at the vet (both in perfect health!!!), and I did have the vet check Tasia's eye, just to be safe.

There verdict? She has 3-4 very, very fine and tiny eyelashes that are growing at an angle and are tickling her eyeball. The vet said it is absolutely nothing to be concerned about, it is not causing any irritation whatsoever, just tickling her eye. Absolutely nothing wrong with the cornea and the whites of her eyes are bright and white! We looked at the other eyeball as well and there are 2 little ones there that haven't caused the eye to water.

My vet said we could send her to a canine opthomologist where she would be anesthecized and the eyelashes frozen to the tune of $1000, but she said she wouldn't do it, if it were her baby, since there is no irritation and it's nothing bothering her.

So, Tasia will keep her beautiful little eyelashes :biggrin2:

PS: Opthomologist and Anesthecized are not in my morning vocabulary - so apologies if spelled wrong. This girl's too lazy to look up the correct spelling :lol:

wow, that is pricey, what she needs is a canine eye lash curler:lol: to get those pesky things going a different direction...
 
Lexi has this as well. It's actually a genetic affliction that is fairly common in shelties. It's called distichia. Luckily it hasn't cropped up on Lexi for a couple years (knock on wood), but when it did we did actually pluck the hair ourselves. I wouldn't recommend it for just anyone to do but she was very good about sitting calmly and we were able to remove them ourselves. Now if it isn't really bothering your dog I would bother. Lexi's really seem to irritate her eye.
