Sneezing before barking???

Just sitting here reading the posts on the forum, when something occurred to me. Bela did a little stretchy play bow, then sneezed four or five times, then started her morning barking session. I realized that she ALWAYS sneezes before she barks. Then, after some thought, I realized that Neechee always did this, too!

Does anyone else's dog do this? Neechee only did it in preparation for the first bark of the day. Bela does it for each barking "session" (after breakfast, after dinner, and the middle of the afternoon snack) - essentially, when she feels playful.

The more I think about it, the weirder it seems. Maybe it's just a Sheltie thing.

LOL, unfortunately, I don't have anything to start you on any leads as to what this might be. Mine never did that but sure sounds cute still! I can just imagine it :P

Actually, I know what you're talking about. Mine sort of snorts a few times before doing his barking/sheltie dance routine before meals or after coming in from the back yard. *SHNORK!* Mommy Mommy I peed in the bush it was awesome can I have some cheese I love you bark bark bark! It's not quite a sneeze and not quite a snort, kind of like what horses do?

He doesn't do it for startled or warning barking, though, just happy barks.

That is so cute, I love when Sandstorm sneezes then barks!

, these are cute posts I am reading here! I know when we take puppy Toby outside, (we have to carry him), he takes in deep breaths enjoying the fresh air and exhaling.. Sometimes both he and Megan will make grunty noises and cute sighs after they yawn..

Come to think of it, it's really more of a sneezy-snort. Neechee always did it when he stubbed his nose on something (which was often). And yes, it's always with happy barking, not alarm barking or startled barking, or just plain old complaint barking.

Brady does this sneezing snorting bark thing when he plays and gets excited. I could swear that I read somewhere that when a dog does this, he/she is laughing!

Forrest does it all the time, Roxie almost never. If he gets excited, upset, scared, whatever, he sneezes, often uproariously and repeatedly:winkgrin:

Greyson has this routine in the morning where he does something similar, he stretches out his front and back legs, then sneezes 3-4 times, then chases his tail and barks. He occasionally does the sneezing thing during the day too, but he doesn't sneeze before every bark (since he barks so much!!).
