My 5.5 month old just got neutered and microchipped this weekend and I could not be happier!

He underwent a laser procedure, which was a little more expensive but resulted in a teeny-tiny incision that is healing beautifully. In fact, aside from a couple groggy hours right after he woke up, I don't think he even feels any discomfort (eating normally and everything, even being a little jumpy, which we are trying to discourage just to be cautious). He's also adjusted nicely to his new e-collar/bonnet, although we don't always keep it on him while we are around because he hasn't shown any tendency to lick or scratch at his sutures. Can't wait for him to completely heal so we can go on long walkies again!!

I'm not really sure why I am writing this post about something so mundane, but I just wanted to share how relieved I feel now that he is neutered and how very thrilled I am that it all went so smooth. So, to all you non-breeder parents out there who may have been holding off, go get your babies neutered! Better sooner rather later, they'll thank you for it, you'll thank you for it, your neighbor's dog might even thank you for it. Plus, the younger they are, the faster they'll bounce back! Just do it :winkgrin:
 
Dickens isn't neutered; he's perfectly happy with his condition, and hasn't been pestering me to have it done. So I think we'll just keep him in his natural state, and see how that works out.

Hi - Love to see photos as well. My little girl Hanna isn't spayed yet - she's 18 weeks. I'm going to have her done sometime in the spring, hopefully before her first heat. She's not very big and it's a bit more invasive for females so we're waiting until she's about 7 to 8 months old. I would do it sooner for a male as I prefer they don't lift their legs.

Even neutered males, no matter the age will still lift their legs if they want to. The irony of this sentence makes me laugh because I want my almost 9 months old to lift his leg since he pees on himself no matter what we do. :lol:

It all depends on if you're a responsible owner. Regardless, neutering/spaying is very responsible. But, not getting them neutered/spayed and watching them so they don't impregnate or get pregnant is also responsible. None of my dogs have been neutered or spayed unless they needed it for health reasons. Our Yorkie is neutered because my mom didn't want Shorkies (sheltie/yorkies) but now they don't even own a female because she lives with me. Needless to say, both options are good options. We have always kept the boys separated from the girls when they're in heat.
 
Melbell- I can only go by past experience. My boy Blue never lifted a leg and he was fixed at 4 months. Dawson only made it to six months of age, so I don't know what he woudl have done later but up til then he peed like a girl.
