snip snip time...

I always figured I'd get Pico neutered sometime early in 2024.
6 months was right before thanksgiving so that wasn't gonna happen.
and trying to do it between thanksgiving and christmas seemed not important.

well, in the last week or so, he has started humping a toy of his if he gets excited.
and he has been marking on walks for the same time frame (still squatting, but he used to pee once a walk and now he will go 2-3 times).

I figure it'll probably happen mid-late January. Since he was born May 10 that'll have him at 8-9 months.
He is around 15 inches tall and 15 lbs now, and I don't expect him to grown in height anymore.
he could lengthen a bit, but not much (he can already counter surf the very edges).
he does have 1 undescended testicle so it'll be a fishing expedition.

We were the same.... Always wanted to go 18 months, but that leg lifting... Both had undescended which is typical with shelties apparently, Brodie's dropped right before. Deacon's was a fishing expedition with a large incision finding it deep in the abdominal cavity. My vet felt that younger they recuperate better and with less issues with waiting so we did. A few days after, and all those hormones are gone! yeah! Keep us posted!

PS - Deacon is shorter but a lb heavier. Brodie is just a hair taller and about 4 pounds heavier. Both are quite portable - great size!

when did brodie's descend?
I have read that if it hasn't by 6 months it isn't likely to so waiting is kinda not advised.

I figure he will end up at @18 lbs.
of course he looks a lot heavier with all his floofy hair

when did brodie's descend?

Literally right before he was snipped. She wasn't as concerned with him because she knew it was right there. He was snipped because he had started marking. In the house, he has 3 'oopsies' which really weren't - he lifted his leg and marked; the first two were forgiven. Once neutered, he went right back to a semi-squat. Other than marking Kooper right before Kooper passed - think Brodie must have sensed something about him - the marking stopped immediately. He lifted his leg two years later on a tree at agility class - I was floored, then he did it again the next year, same time frame - it was like an annual let it all out thing I guess. He didn't do it this year. Brodie does a semi-squat, lifts his left leg towards the end, but never on anything, just like a girl he just pees wherever. Deacon squats, never leg lifted. Both were neutered 8 - 9 months. My vet understood my desire to hold off, but also told me dogs marking is a habit that is hard to break once instilled - nip it in the bud which the neuter did. She told me with Deacon that shelties can be a tad slower to drop, but didn't want to wait any longer because she couldn't feel his. She used an u/s the day of - his was more like a spay AND a neuter, tiny excision for the one that was thee, big incision on his side. His never would have shown up - it was nowhere near where it should have been.

Deacon is such a massive floof ball but when wet, he really resembles a whippet - he is small in stature, big in personality.

the marking doesn't bother me too much right now, but I definitely don't want it to become a habit so it's time.
A friend's dog marks all the time even though he has been neutered for years. Probably because the previous owner waited and it became a habit :(
She was stunned when I told her my theory as she had no concept of why he marked obsessively just that he did and that's what male dogs do.

I got my crew at nearly 8 mo old, both a intact female and male soooo it was not a waiting game for us. We had a dozy of a time finding a vet locally with an open appt and since they had not seen the dogs that had to happen first- we did, they did, and the deed was done within a month. Our male had started lifting his leg and marking furniture-- to the point we put a diaper wrap on him. After neutering he mostly stopped unless another dog comes over and even that has faded.. now when he pees he sort of squats and then lifts his leg so yeah waiting imho is not worth it. Both dogs were done on the same day, both slept the rest of the day when they came home from the vet and the next day it was life back to normal like nothing had happened.. The vets used super glue to close the outside of the wound so no stitches to worry over and neither seemed to be concerned with the wounds-- if I remember the male may have had absorbent stitches- but again did not bother them?? We had inflatable collars at the ready but they wore them one day and didn't need them. Good luck Pico, tell him that you are taking him to get tutored (from G Larson cartoon)-- sounds so much better than the n word..
