Snoring plus a rant

First off, two things and the first thing.

Do all shelties snore when they sleep? Kota snores all the time. She's also always hot. ( she feels warm to the touch sometimes) been to the vet, everything's fine. Normal temperature. As I've mentioned before, she will start off sleeping in her bed, then a few moments later will move off of it and lay on her side and or sprawled out on tummy.

Oh and. The sneaking... Not kota, husband! I've got kota on a low fat diet to help her lose weight. I was wondering why it stopped working. I rarely pick her up, but when I did to bath her she seemed to have gained more weight. I started to lessen the food intake. ( you know where this is going right) you got it. Hubby has been sneaking her table scraps. Bread, raw meat, cooked meat, ECT.

What the hey. No wonder she gained weight. When I tild him I could barely lift her, he realized where he went wrong. After h ow many times I told him I want her to lose weight as she's to heavy for the size she is. She reminds me of those fat dachshunds when I bathed her. I also mentioned how dangerous it was to give raw meat in her diet without proper care. I told him he was forbidden to give her any kind of meat weather raw or cooked or anything other than dog food.

Sorry about that. Had to rant a bit. So, kota has now exceeded our landlords weight of 20 lbs 25 max. She is now a whopping 33 lbs. She doesn't look it thanks to her fur, but for her small stature that is too heavy.

So, I think I'm going to call our vet n see if he can give us a weight management plan. In the mean time, any ideas besides more walks and less food intake. We dont have a pool so water is out of the question.

Put her on a low fat dog food. There are many good ones on the market now.

In all the years that I have owned Shelties, not one ever snored! However, My Persian cat does! :ROFLMAO:

Yep, tell your husband he is busted!!!:cautious:

We give Zulu unsalted cut green beans as a treat. They have almost zero calories, and he loves them. Neither one of my Shelties snored. When I was a kid, we had a doxie that would sleep on his back and snore!

Thanks guys for letting me rant a bit. Ill try the unsalted green beans for treats. Would thawed frozen green beans work?

Looks like we have to do 20 to 30 minutes of brisk walk. Since she's always so slow, ill get hubby to join us and walk from behind kota to get her moving. She doesnt like people behind her when she walks and will usually walk faster.

If husband doesn't like it, ill say its his fault. She was doing fine until he started feeding her table scraps. S he'll have to deal with it.

Oh dear, you are fighting two battles, LOL, your dog's weight and your hubby! I don't know why people equate food with love for their dogs. With Brooke, she was a good 5 - 6 lb overweight when she came, I just measured her food with a measuring cup, and we walked two miles a day. Snacks were baby carrots, pieces of apple or banana. Weight came off (she was 8 at the time). Just used regular dog food that my other girls were already on. Same with a couple of overweight foster dogs I had.

I was stopped just the other day by an older man with an adorable Sheltie boy in his car (he saw me walking the girls). When I was able to pet his dog, I couldn't believe how fat he was, so we had a discussion on food management. Explained how hard it was on his dog's joints to be so overweight, and that it would shorten his life. Turns out the guy was feeding his Sheltie around 16 oz of food every day - that's TWO CUPS a day! I told him, mine get a HALF CUP morning and evening. Hopefully I made a dent on his thinking.

Good luck! It can be done!!

Frozen green beans are a favorite with my girls, no need to defrost, also frozen carrots in stick form are a good long chew, banana's, frozen peas, broccoli and cauliflower. Plenty of healthy snacking options for husband! (And I feel your pain. When we brought our kitty in to the vet this year she said she wanted to see her lose about four pounds. Everyday I tell my husband that the kitty has already eaten her food, and everyday he protests that she wants more and refills her food dish.)

When we tried adopting that sheltie girl three years ago, we met the foster mom and she proudly told me that she finally got her up to a good weight. The dog was about two thirds the size of Honey and weighed just as much...:banghead: Same with my parents, my mom complains that her dog never eats all his food, and I tell her he's overweight, and my dad says, well we don't like those skinny dogs.

OMG, I had to laugh a bit. Your husband sure wasn't helping. Hehe. First, I'm wondering if Kota is running warm and snoring due to the weight. I know I snore and am hot due to being overweight.

Also, no need to thaw the green beans, Kota may like the cool crunchy treat. So, try it frozen. If she doesn't take to it, then yeah, thaw it out.

Good luck! And hopefully husband will stop feeding her or tell him to he can feed her X amount of green beans a day. Gotta re-teach both of them, haha.

I agree with K9 that Kota is probably snoring due to the excess weight. I feel for you Zana...I also have Piper on a diet, he was a bit on the overweight side but a shoulder injury pushed him over and he's now 4 lbs overweight (he's managed to lose a pound so far. We do 2 mile walks now a day and I've cut down his food. He also gets a lot of veggies for treats (broccoli, cauliflower and even cabbage or lettuce) and almost no cookies. I also have a friend who has a treadmill and we've been putting him on it...no problem getting him used to it. If you have a treadmill or know of someone I'd give it a try...you could do short sessions more frequently.

The treadmill is a great idea, I have one here that I use for the dogs when I can't get them out walking or I need to get them fit. They don't have to trot (some dogs don't take to that on the treadmill but others do). Mine just walk at a good pace while I hold the leash. Use a harness and not a collar if you do use one though, it's safer.

My Checkers snores, and she isn't overweight! I've had one or two that do, usually when they're older though. Good luck with the weight plan....frozen green beans are great, right out of the bag! I mix them with food and mine love them.
