Soon to be Momma

Hi Everyone!
I have a deposit down but MY sheltie isn't born yet.
I have been just devouring videos, chats, and websites reading as much as I can. Owned many dogs but never my dream dog-the Sheltie.
I know brushes have been addressed many times and that you need a slicker, rake, pin brush minimum.
I would like to start buying these items now so my cost is spread out over the next few months. Again, puppies are due any day so we are looking at 8 weeks minimum.
I see a lot of recommendations for CC brushes or Madan. I just don't understand how you know what shape, size, stiffness to buy.
For example the Madan brush comes in different shapes and colors (stiffness). How do you choose?!
I appreciate this site so much!
I can't wait to see what the babies are like and pick out my sweetie.
Thank you all!

I just went through the same thing. My puppy is almost 12 weeks old now. :) The waiting is so hard!

Here is the CC pin brush I have. I like it, but I can't really use it much yet as he still has his puppy coat. I'm pretty sure I got the idea to get this specific one from someone on here though.

Here is the rake I have. I love it. It was also recommended on here.

I think a comb and slicker are probably the most useful things you'll use early on (interestingly those are the things I don't have yet, haha). I'm using a plastic "people" comb right now, because his puppy coat is so coarse. I'm buying some real ones soon, though.

I have a small pair of scissors (I already had them) that I use for his little hobbit feet. I'll probably get some electric clippers to get between his paw pads better.

I'll also be getting some thinning shears for when his ears need trimming. I'm still looking for some good ones, though.

I have a dremel for his nails. It works great.

I agree - you won't need a whole lot of grooming equipment until the adult coat grows in (maybe in 6mths) and you're better off waiting anyway until you know what sort of coat s/he will have and how big s/he will be. My dogs have different brushes because of their different coat texture, thickness & sizes, only brush I use for both is the slicker. A slicker is a good place to start and some nail clippers, it's best to get your pup used to having it's feet touched for clipping straight away.

Otherwise the other grooming stuff I suggest is some good quality shampoo and a towel (a good chamois type towel is useful when the coat grows in too), because s/he will probably get into lots of mess as a pup.

Btw - I find human pin brushes are better than the dog ones - they have softer bristles (mine have plastic pins) and the dogs prefer them. So you can just use what's in your drawers until you decide if you want to lash out.

Grooming.JPG This is my grooming kit that has stood the test of time. CC FUSION brush (no balls on tips is crucial), a traditional undercoat rake (not blade or furminator), small snub nosed scissors, quality thinning shears, 3 sizes of combs (wide with round tines, medium with teflon type coating, flea), and water to spritz lightly while grooming. I used to show Persian cats so everything is what I used back then too. I did replace my old pin that was falling apart with a CC Fusion which I really love.

When my Cubby was a tyke I used the medium comb or the pin. Melli will only tolerate the pin. My shepherd mix gets the flea comb. During shedding time I use the rake. I mostly use the rake on my one longhair cat. Investing in good tools will last you a lifetime.

Congratulations on the puppy! The waiting is so hard, but worth it.

Cubby has a great basic list above of the grooming tools you need. The only other thing I have is one of those grooming gloves ( a glove with brush bristles). This is just a personal choice, but I like to sit on the couch with the dogs and just use that to brush while we are resting. For me the glove is just easier to use and is a bit more of a "touch" so it make sit more personal when we are hanging out.
