spay day

They actually didn't give her a cone because shes a girl?? I thought that was weird but apparently since the stitches were internal that it wasn't necessary just keep an eye on her. her incision is pretty center of her belly so I dont even know how she would be able to lick it anyways but we are definitely discouraging it. I can tell shes a bit agitated I think its itchy or something because she keeps running in circles and trying to bite her butt/legs .
Right now she is bugging the cat by biting his tail while he drinks. So i think she feels pretty good. Shes a little more tired and definitely a little more grumpy I just gave her some medication and I think thats alleviating some pain. I am glad they didn't have to shave her at all. I am just glad that she is home. and not in the scary metal kennel anymore. She came home and ate 2 big bowls of food so I think she was refusing to eat while at the vet. I tried to look at it last night and got a growl but she eventually was cool with me looking. It turns she STILL has coccidia though so it just won't freaking go away. They gave me stronger medication so hopefully that eliminates that damn parasite. I am thinking it might be why she isn't that big yet from a comment by someone else on the forums how when the coccidia was gone their puppy shot up in growth.

Anyways shes acting normal, and the cut looks clean and tiny so I think shes almost already forgotten about it. Now it will just be keeping her from acting like a crazy person... Me and the BF were cringing everytime she jumped up or off the couch last night and shes being a little more cautious with that stuff but I still try and lift her on and off right now. gives me the heebyjeebies:dead:

Ohh, though you aren't that far from where I am, the procedure definitely sounds slightly different. From the staying a day over night, to the no cone, to the middle of the belly. to no shave.

I guess it's different everywhere? Precious had the (I just checked on the receipt for the exact name) - Ovariohysterectomy Small Dog Spay Surgery. It was a day surgery so I dropped her off in the early morning then around 5, 6 in the afternoon or whenever after a certain time, I was able to pick her up and bring her home to rest. They did shave her belly. The stitches were close to the bottom, easily reachable if she were to lie down and reach over as if she was licking her feet. Or just like how dogs like to lick 'down there', if you know what I mean. So hence the cone to stop her from reaching over and infecting it. And if not infecting it, also cause they put like an disinfectant thing when they sent her home so I didn't want her 'consuming' any of that by accident either. Inside or outside stitches, I don't have any medical knowledge to know what's what but regardless the stitches were still pink and a bit raw so I made sure to avoid getting them dirty when she was out for short pee breaks and also to make sure she wasn't making the area dirty herself. The stitches were dissolveable but ours didn't by the 10th day so when we went for our post-surgery check up, the vet snipped them off since it healed nicely. So for Precious, the reason she was itchy and trying to 'chase' her stomach was because 1) the stitches I'm sure felt awkward for her but also 2) the short shaved hair was prickly I'm sure.

All in all, I guess all that matters is that she's fine and her spay went well. I know your Luna is a jumper on the couch. You'll want to watch out for that. Precious didn't know how to go up and down stairs and was still pretty calm and quiet back with no jumping then so her stitches healed up nicely with no problems :) She just slept a lot and ate and followed me around the house, she was quite the shadow back then :P

Since Luna doesnt have a cone... Here's Precious with hers a few months back :D

Glad she is doing well. Emma jumped off my bed the first night - and it is almost three feet high. She didn't like much at the area. To tell the truth, it didn't slow her down at all - she was impossible to keep quiet. I didn't use the cone much at all. They did give me Rimadryl for pain but because Emma has such wierd reactions to medications I didn't use it at all and she didn't seem to need it. By the way, Liam was the same - no cone, no meds. The only licking he did was to wash the pink-coloured antiseptic off is belly.

We thought we were keeping Pyper pretty quiet, but she still developed a tiny lump by her stitches. I forget what they called it, but the vet said if it got bigger, they might have had to drain it. Soooo...watch the jumping on and off the couch, just to be safe. Hope she's feeling her old self quickly!

have people noticed a difference in their dogs after spaying? energy or personality wise. online dog websites say that there could be a change just wondering if people have noticed a difference with their dogs??

Yes! Ember was psycho when her hormones were in play. She would get really dizzy about a month before her season, extremely aggressive during her season and then a combo of aggressive and dizzy for a month after. She scared Justice to death. Considering 2 cycles a year that was half the year crazy!

I spayed her at 2.5yrs 2 days after her breeder agreed to let me spay her. She mellowed out almost instantly. She was still active and energric but she no longer had that edge to her. She acted like she did when she wasn't around the time of her season. Her focus during traning improved tredimously.

If she had been spayed before her first season I doubt I would have noticed a difference.
