Still pooping indoors at 6 months!

Hi All,

Potty training is driving me crazy!

Little Skye does fairly well in our routine. Pees / poops in the morning, pees every couple of hours during the day, midday poop, then poop after dinner.

But she is still pooping in the house! Shes pooped twice in her pen in the living room this week even after she had pooped at night after dinner. Sometime I will take her out and she has no interest in doing anything, then 30 minutes later she poops in the house. She hasn't had a pee accident in awhile, but shes just not getting it with regards to pooping in the house. Anyone else have a similar issue? Shes being crated during the day but with frequent breaks.

Potty training is driving me nuts! :gaah

This is a tough one. Accidents at 6 months aren't unusual, but consistent pooping in the house isn't fun. Sprite is 5 months now and some days she does great; others, we have a few blips. But generally she's got the idea.

I find if she gets off her schedule and doesn't go at the normal times, we'll have accidents. You need to be able to predict when Skye needs to go. It sounds like you have a routine down, but is she getting it all done when she poops? I've had puppies who will do some and then be so excited for the treat the rest happens in the house. When this happens I take them out again in 15 to 30 minutes.

When you take her out, is she loose in a yard or on leash? My suggestion would be to put an x-pen in the yard and put her inside it until she does her chores. I string two pens together so they have a bit more room, but they're still confined and I can keep an eye on things. Puppies tend to get distracted too easily by leaves or birds or almost anything, and forget what they're there for!

I know it's hard but be patient...she will get it! Keep up with praise and special treats for performing.

Cleo was pretty good about not pooping in the house at 6 months. But I will say she goes once in the morning. During my lunch break, we take about a mile walk. She goes anywhere from one to three time during that walk, then once in the evening before bed. But this goes to show you, sometimes they are not fully done and can possibly go more than once. Always make sure you keep an eye on them because thinking and knowing they pooped are very different. Also, walking them around tends to get things moving so a poop is more likely to happen when you are walking them. This is from my recent experience.

Oh that sucks! No advice, only make sure to clean up really well after each accident so the scent is gone, and if you catch her in the act be very dramatic about how disappointed you are. No yelling or getting aggressive, but make a big 'woe is me' type deal - Shelties are so sensitive they don't want to disappoint you.

And praise to high heaven when she does poop outdoors, give high quality treats etc.

If her poops are runny it could also be a stomach or food issue, where she just can't hold it for very long.

I'm so sorry your potty training has hit a bump, I think the key is consistency and keeping the same routine. I haven't experienced any problems like that with Piper but I did teach him the words pee and poop so when I need him to go I tell him go poop and you get a cookie....boy oh boy does he run haha. Other than that just keep doing what your doing and as Fireweed said do make a big show of it if you catch them in the act, about a month ago Piper pee'd on my bed right in front of me. He didn't get scolded per se but he was out the door fast and I don't think he'd do it again (I hope). Good luck!

I don't have a magic answer either, because Callan at 18 months has gone off his training as well.

Something has spooked him outside, so he relunctantly goes out, then comes inside and poops and pees. He is 18 months old and was well beyond this 12 months ago.

Just spent $350 to get my big area carpet cleaned. I'm not laying it down until I'm satisfied that Callan is back on track. And yes he is xpen during the day and night when I'm not home. He does this nonsense when I'm home. And usually 15 minutes after I let him out.

So its back to basics....which means I need to go outside with him to make sure he does his business before I let him back in. Period.

Sansa is an apt dog so 99% of the mess happens indoors. She' like clockwork with it and other than her occasional aim issues (on the pad but butt hangin over the edge) she's good....but until I clear off one of my balconies and make some sort of doggie door, I just have to deal with it. I just ordered a baby Ubbi "diaper pail" so I can stop individually bagging the sheets. :ick At least it will come in handy when I eventually have a human baby or two
