Surgery Grants/Financial Aid

My sheltie, Miles is in need of what is called a femoral resection for his back right hip. This surgery is necessary for quality and longevity of life, lest Miles suffer and be what the vet called a "gimpy" dog. We have seen first-hand the pain this has caused and how he does not use that back leg. It is also likely that Miles would become arthritic early on (he's only four). Needless to say, it is a $2,000 surgery that we do not have the $$ for. Does anyone know of any organizations that offer aid or grants for necessary procedures?
 
Unfortunately, I do not, but have you looked into carecredit? It is a credit card for medical or veterinary expenses. Sometimes they offer no interest financing for 6 months. http://www.carecredit.com/

So sorry for your pup and an I hope he can get the surgery.
 
theres a program called carecredit, and there is another one that I am drawing a blank on....orrr you can take out a personal loan which has a lower interest rate than say a cc.
 
What's the difference between a femoral head resection, and a femoral head osteotomy? We have done the latter with dysplastic puppies that come in the rescue. Maybe it's an age thing. Either way, we certainly didn't pay $2k to have that done. Maybe a second or third estimate would be the way to go.

Not sure what the difference is, but I will be sure to ask. As it is, our vet said these surgeries are usually $5-6,000, so him being willing to do it for $2,000 seems like he's really cutting us a break.

Unfortunately, loans are not an option for us because my student loans are killer. Because of that, we can't afford to have something else to pay back, which is why I'm wondering about actual financial aid.

I'm so sorry to hear about your pup. I would suggest making a facebook page and have people donate directly to the vet's office. Tell the pup's story, along with pictures and such. I've donated to a few individuals this way. Share it with as many organizations as you can and then they'll share it. Maybe put ads on CL and let people know how to donate to the vet. Bake sale perhaps? Clean houses? Car Wash? Just thinking of little services you could provide as a thanks...

I've donated to some people through http://www.chipin.com/ but you would want to scan medical records or something just to show people, or give the option of donating to the vet directly since some people are more leery of donating without knowing for sure. I think you can get $2,000 from people or at least a good amount. A pitbull was killed in a town in Texas, Austin actually, and the owner started a chip in and the goal was $2k and they got up to over 5K! All that money went to bully rescue in Austin...I only chipped in $20 so it shows how just a little from a lot of people adds up!

Umm... no. I don't even think our local Sports Medicine Orthopedic Specialty Vet charges that. You know, the one that people travel from all over the East Coast to see. That is absolutely outrageous.

The estimate includes everything- from the anesthesia to the surgery, and all the post-op meds. It was for $1,700 but they gave a variance of up to $2,000. Does that still seem high?
 
Hi. sorry your dog is having this issue. This estimate sounds ok to me...make sure to get physical therapy post surgery too. Sometimes a veterinary hopspital will allow you to pay for 1/2 of the procedure at the time it's done and pay the rest within an agreed upon time. Care Credit ,as others have mentioned would be my suggestion or borrowing from a family member. hope you can work something out.
