Tail Fur Question!!!

Our Brodie turned 2 in November. He is not a heavy coated sheltie as of yet. I think your boy looks to have a marv coat, great tail, thin pants. For some odd reason, this is year #2 where his 'pants' are thin to the point of non-existent. I think it's an odd time of year to not coat out considering our temps, but he did the same last year. Maybe your boy has just not developed his adult coat? I am sure Brodie has not, even when he does, he is not going to be a heavy coated dog I don't believe although time may prove me wrong. Your boy looks to have beautiful colors in his coat!
 
I would not be afraid it not will grow out again
Minnie got her full coat about 3 y
I cut 2-3 cm of Minnie's tail several times a year.

Minnie often gets this , Bowny Burdock (Burre).jpg in the fur (Bowny burdock ?)
last time I had to cut a huge knot approx. 15 cm of tangled fur of her pants
all the way to the skin :gaah and it has already started to grow out again.

I had my pup groomed back when he was 1.5 years old and I specifically said to the groomer, don’t touch his tail. The groomer ended up cutting him super short, like almost shaving him, in a puppy cut kind of way. Needless to say, I stopped using her. Ever since then (he just turned 3 on February 5th) I have noticed there’s fur that doesn’t seem to grow back and I’m concerned it will be like this forever and that this was part of his tail fur, not his actual body coat. The area in question is where the tail and body coat meet, hopefully you can tell with my pics...What do you all think?? I’m so sad and I don’t know what to do. I feel like she ruined my baby boy.

I am so sorry to hear this.i don't know how to groom Luke but not taking him to any groomer that doesn't have wonderful reviews with sheltes
 
I'm glad this thread popped up again, I'll just add something else because I was talking to some breeders about it recently.

In the upper area of the tail is a gland, called that supracaudal gland, which can become infected. It is called 'stud tail', although it can happen in males and females. A medicated shampoo is often the first approach, but if it is getting worse, doesn't improve with the shampoo or gets smelly you may need to get some antibiotics.
