Terrible haircut - owners need reassurance

So Murphy had his first summer haircut today. As I've said in other threads, my wife and I are first time pet owners. We inherited an adult sheltie (6 years old) from my sister-in-law last fall, so this is the first summer we've gone through with a dog in the house.

I took Murphy for a grooming today. So far, we've used the same grooming service my sister-in-law did. We haven't been completely sold on them, but they've been good with Murphy and he's kinda skittish and not well behaved at the groomer. All in all, we feel like the most important thing is to have a groomer who's good with him and he's comfortable with.

I considered having his fur cut short, but decided against it after doing some research. All we wanted was a good shampoo and brushout, & a moderate trim, with some extra attention paid to problem areas like the butt. I explained what I wanted in great detail to the groomer, and went over it again last night when they called to confirm the appointment.

I dropped Murphy off this morning. What I didn't know is that, due to illness, the groomer I talked to didn't work today and Murphy was handed off to a groomer who cut his hair when my sister-in-law owned him. Apparently, my instructions weren't passed along and somehow, she thought she should give the dog the haircut my sister-in-law asked for.

She cut his hair really short. It's a little more than an inch long all over. Basically, Murphy looks funny looking, like a different type of dog. My wife and I are both livid. Basically, we went off on the staff when we saw the dog, to the point I'm sure we're not welcome back (not that we'd ever go back).

Murphy wasn't shaved. The hair was just cut short. He's had this haircut several times before, and it grew back, so I expect it will grow back this time. Maybe it's not the best it could be when it grows back, but Murph is totally a family companion dog. So long as his furs grows back so he looks like a sheltie, I could care less if it's the best coat it could be. The more important thing is that he's comfortable and safe.

My first question is: does this pose any health risk to the dog? Normally temps around here stay in the high 80's/low 90's. We don't typically get mid 90's - 100, though we did during the recent heat wave. Murphy is an indoor dog. During the summer, he plays outside in the early morning, then stays in until dusk, when he gets dinner and a walk (and usually sits on the porch with us). Is he in much danger of overheating without his usual undercoat?

Secondly, how long does it take sheltie fur to grow out in the summer? In fall, winter, and spring, his fur grew out a couple of weeks after we had him trimmed. Two weeks later, you couldn't tell he had a haircut. I'm under the impression dog fur grows more slowly in summer. A month or two?

Thanks. We feel like terrible owners right now. Moral of the story: get your own groomer!

awww, many experienced dog owners on here have similar stories... you poor dears!!!
You are wonderful guardians to Murphy, there is nothiong to feel bad about!
Having his hair cut short will be fine for him, good thing it wasn't shaven... I'd feel like smacking these idiots if I were you... :biggrin2::gaah

It takes Sheltie A LONG time go grow their fur back, unfortunately I don't think you'll get his full coat back this summer...

last summer I thought I would do my dog boy a favor and have him shaved for the summer. I talked it over with his groomer and asked her for her advice. So, down Beau went. An hour later I came back to pick up my boy and I exclaimed," Beau what did your momma, do to you?" I felt terribly guilty. He came back upstairs looking like a little mini Rhodesian ridge back. Not kidding in the least. I felt terrible. Like I abused him. He didn't really seem to mind though and in the end, it grew back by Sept. (I had him cut around June) :uhoh:

And I have to say, he had few(if any) fleas on him last summer

I understood that the hair protects the skin in the summer? What made you think it was good to cut off all the hair? Did you read that somewhere? I understand that your upset and the grommer should have called you if there was a conflict. They should have known better anyway...

Ah, welcome to my life!

Shelties should not be shaven unless for health reasons (e.g. surgery). Shave only if the coat is so matted there are no longer any options, and even then, only with your approval. This should be a last resort for serious cases only.

Two things happen when Shelties are inappropriately clipped.

1) It exposes their skin to the sun, and increases the chance of sunburn and worse, melanoma
2) It might cause the fur to grow back in a really funky way. That's whay I'm dealing with now.

As for fur growing out....to my chagrin, the guard hair seems to take forever (after being clipped), but the undercoat....no time at all...that's why I have constant rumple butt with Bacca

I didn't think it was good idea. I was just expecting the groomer to trim the hair a bit.

Two things came to mind when I read about this unfortunate incident. One, I'm amazed that the groomer did not write down somewhere what exactly you wanted, especially given how specific you had been in your conversations with her. There should have been notes somewhere so if she were gone, her replacement could have figured it out, or at least realized you wanted something "different" and called you for clarification.

Two, I seriously hope you didn't pay for anything.

So sorry that the groomers didn't do what you asked. This is a common problem for sheltie owners b/c many groomers want to give all dogs a"puppy cut"and this isn't how most sheltie owners want their dogs groomed. Many of us do our own grooming and it really is not hard and gives you some time together with your dog. Sally is used to this now and relaxes through a good bit of it. She gets a nice massage too and of course turkey jerky. Since Murphy is feeling all fresh and all you might as well enjoy a little less fur to deal with in hot weather and different look for you little guy. Pics would be nice.

I'll probably take some pics tomorrow, but, yeah, he doesn't look bald so I don't think there's a serious risk of sunburn. He looks furry - just short-haired furry instead of long-haired. To me, he looks a bit like a beagle.

I second this :D
I never go to a groomer, but Toffee sometimes looks a tad wild with grinch toes and funky, old man ear hair, lol
