Thank God they are fast...

When I traipse through the woods, especially in newer areas. I arm up. I carry a knife. Only because I am good with them. I also have pepper spray and a safety horn. I have used the horn for coyotes, and once with a bear long ago. But in your scenario not sure those would have helped.

Funny you mention the horn, because that's what I'm going to get. Game and Fish suggests yelling and throwing rocks if they charge you. Javelina are almost blind but hearing and smell are acute. Those horns are loud! Looking back on "shoulda, woulda, coulda" there is a good chance my running and screaming could have been a factor in the beastie choosing escape over more confrontation.
I don't even flinch at coyotes anymore, had a stare down with a bobcat last week, but a BEAR?? Holy cow that javelina looks insignificant now!

That thing is icky

My CO mt property had bears, if you are out of trails in CO especially in the high country you might see them. Spring and Fall are the seasons with the most activity because they are hungry. Mostly they keep to themselves. But coyotes, near my former city property were becoming bold, and they would stalk you. They were big and I hated them. They were not easily scared off. Bobcats never bothered me, they always ran off. I have seen cougars chase deer, never me. But my running friends had some risky encounters with them. They always run with safety horns on trails. What if there aren't rocks where they show up, what if you have voice paralysis from fear-it happens. Some can have fear induced asthma were you can't speak or catch your breath. Horns are a good tool. We are encroaching on habitats that make encounters more plentiful. CO had fires, drought, and that factored in to animals not being able to have food readily available. But in all seriousness, animals didn't cause me as much alarm as the people did. My former shelties were not very vocal, but I knew to steer clear of anyone they took exception with especially on trails. I respected their intuition and 6th sense. Kaleigh & Savannah aren't that receptive. Or haven't displayed any signs of it yet. Our world is a tense place lately imho. So you gotta be more diligent in protecting yourself and your furbabies

I would never mess with our coyotes. It's just I'm an Indiana girl, so I'm used to Indiana problems. Tornadoes- grew up with those- they don't scare me. Hurricanes totally freak me out! Lightening all the way across the sky? Enjoy the light show. Coyotes- stay away from 'em. Brown recluses- kill 'em. Scorpions- don't have them here- they scare me! And I've heard that they hide in your shoes, how is THAT fair? Those javelina things look pretty nasty.

The bark scorpion is very small but its sting packs a wallop. The toxin causes severe pain, numbness, tingling and swelling. Oh its not just your shoes they hide in :sneaky:. I was on the patio one day and glanced through the bedroom slider just in time to see my husband as he was pulling on his briefs that he just took out of a basket of laundry. All of a sudden he was jumping and flailing around, then I see the briefs get flung, then the laundry basket and the chair go flying! LOL He had glanced down just in the nick of time to see a scorpion in his underwear right before he pulled them all the way up!

Ohhhhh hooooooo ohhh! Nope! No way! Nope! I'll take my chances with a recluse. They are reclusive, and have never hid in my underwear!

Wow, that could have ended badly!! Here in our area of California, coyotes are the main worry - I have seen them out in broad daylight along our creek where we walk in the afternoons. Other than that, I worry about the girls investigating the black and white "kitty" (skunk) that cruises around in the evening.....

Glad your handsome boys are OK, Margi - hope your hip is better too.

We have a fat skunk population here, and they let us know in the wee morning hrs that they have been found. Pepe le pew, oohwee they are nasty! I would rid the world of skunks, coyotes, flies-especially biting ones, mosquitoes, ants, and wasps. All of which I don't need going after my furbabies.
