I recently discovered that the cow hooves sold in pet stores (just the plain clean hooves) are great chew toys.
I have two 8 month old shelties (DJ and Mick), and a larger rescue mutt (Matilda), all great chewers. DJ has a tiny mouth. Part of the problem was that chew toys that fit Mick and DJ are way too small for Matilda and she quickly destroyed them.
Well, cow hooves are the answer. They are large and tough enough to last and they are shaped so that even little DJ can use them.
 
All of mine love cow hooves! They are the BEST for my 9 mo puppy! (except late at night when he thinks he's bored.)

I'll remember those....I've been giving Bacca dental Dingo bones which he loves, but I find they just aren't lasting as long as they used to! And they aren't cheap!

Altho they are still sold is stores, the breeder in which I got Caliber from had read and heard on the news that "Greenies" are actually not safe for dogs. They chew off splinters that get caught in their throats and have needed medical attention and - in some cases - have caused death. After hearing that and even if they say they have "improved" the product...I still wouldn't give it to Caliber if it was the last thing on earth to chew on. I give him big pig bones now....he loves them(I suppose that's the same concept as cow hooves!!) I'd stick with natural things like bones and hooves.

EEP! I would NEVER feed Greenies to my dogs! With all the bad press they have received, the number of dogs that have died because of them, and the horrible way that the company handled it, I'm not giving them a dime of my money.

If you are looking for a good natural chew, check out bully sticks. Sometimes called "pizzles". They are completely natural, 100% digestible, and cannot be broken into small pieces that can pose choking or blockage problems like other rawhides or chews.

Stay away from the bones sold at pet stores, as well. If you are wanting to give any bone to a dog, it should be raw and covered in meat. Chewing the bone itself provides no benefit to dental health, but poses a very large chance of chipping and breaking teeth. The bones sold at pet stores are sterilized, heated, smoked, and/or bleached. These processes chemically change the structure of the bone and cause it to be much too dense and hard for dog teeth. Just because something is sold at a pet store doesn't mean that it is good for pets ... it just means that people are gullible enough to spend money on it. :lol:
 
My breeder suggested taking raw chicken tenders and freezing them to give for a chewie. She said it's soothing for teethers and of course it is a healthy food. A chickensicle!

So after reading this thread I thought I'd try the cow hooves and it's a no go for Darcy. He LOVES his bully sticks! But they make his breath horrific! :dead: So I thought I'd give it a go and he was not really into it. I guess back to the bully sticks for us. Anyone know if the fact the bully sticks makes his breath smell bad is due to the quality of them?? I know what they are so I guess they just might not smell very good anyways just wondering.
