The boys are going herding

Great video! It is funny how each dog is different when they see the sheep for the first time. There were 4 shelties the day Mikos did it, and there were 4 different reactions to the sheep. Mikos was first and he took to running and gathering the sheep right away, the 2nd one would not leave his owner even when the owner went near the sheep with the handler. The 3rd one would wander around, sometimes running a bit by the sheep then just checking out the fence line. The 4th one wasn't interested until they brought in the handlers border collie and as soon as she started working the sheep, the sheltie got into it. Very cool to watch!
 
I loved Gizz checking out the sable. It was like the light bulb moment and he got it all of a sudden. When do you go again?
 
For a first time look see I think they both did great, you should have seen some of My BC's the first time they saw sheep, it was like whee haa do I chase or do I eat these things or should I just pin them in the corner. Auzzie
was really the only BC I had that was a pure natural right from the get go he took to it like a duck to water.

doing herding with Che is like doing aerobics, I gave up trying to figure it out myself and now only watch how my trainer works him, hopefully in a couple of years we will graduate to measured walks and collected moves...

I did too!!!! OMG... makes me want to quit my job and become a professional sheltie daycare provider :wink2: ... I don't have the expertise to breed, but I'd gladly babysit!!

And WOW.... Grizz did so well at herding! I watched it twice! You must have been so proud. :smile2:
 
Oh how fun. I am sooo taking Koji, one day. Maybe when it's not "wet" out for weeks. LOL.

Question: do the sheep care? I mean, Koji likes to chase things down while barking, I'm afraid the sheep are just going to keel over and die of a heart attack. Or would you say they're used to being "pushed around" by a loud mouthy dog?

I guess, I'm afraid Koji is going to traumatize the poor sheep.
 
The place we went to had sheep for each level of herding dog so the first timers get the completely easy going sheep who don't seem bothered by the dogs. I think they classified them as cooperative sheep!!

Depends on the sheep. Most instructors I know use "test sheep" for instinct testing and the HT/PT levels. Those sheep are pretty bombproof, but can be stubborn because they know what they are supposed to do. So when the dog prevents them from doing that, they can be cranky. They can do the A course on their own without the dog :smile2:

Hahaha. I like that. Okay, I'm going to try. I have heard that it screws up agility dogs. Any truth to that?

The local (and by that I mean within 50 miles) sheep herding thing is only on thursday's, so I'll have to take a day off. But I am always going to wonder otherwise. Now, I just need to find a "dry" time to do this during.
