How Shelly the Sheltie was humiliated on day and why she does not like squirrels.
One afternoon, when Shelly was about 6 years old, we lived an older neighborhood with large old sugar maple trees. Our yard was cleared of the old huge maple tree many years earlier and an above ground pool sat where the trees once stood. Near the pool was the tool shed. Across the fence were the old maple trees.
On this particular day, I walked out the kitchen door with Shelly not far behind me, as this is her place in life. I spotted on of the local squirrels sitting quietly in the middle of the yard, happily munching on something it had found. The squirrel was busy eating and did not notice that there was a ball of fur running full tilt boogie speed toward the unsuspecting squirrel.
Shelly was within feet of the squirrel when it realized it was about to become the latest play toy. It leapt into the air, landing on the pool deck, and then headed for the shed. It hit the side of the shed and could not hold the aluminum siding and fell to the ground. Back to the pool deck, this time it hit the roof. Off the roof, and into the tree – across the fence.
Shelly was stopped by the fence, the squirrel ran farther up the tree, Shelly barking madly at the fence line, when the squirrel must had realized that dogs cannot climb, especially a dog behind the fence, so it climbed back down to just above the fence, faced Shelly, and let out a mocking squeak squeak squeak as if it were laughing at Shelly.
To this day, if you say “Shelly, there is a squirrel in your yard”, she is out the doggie door as fast as a 14 year old senior citizen can muster; barking all the way, out to the back fence.
I have since moved to a newer neighborhood where the oldest tree is 14 years old, so they are not large enough to support a squirrel population, but we have rabbits, everywhere!
OH! Do not tell Shadow that there is a rabbit in his yard.
